5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource
I already had Little Acts of Grace and Just Like Mary, both lovely little books, so I was surprised by the previous reviewer's rating and opinion of the illustrations. I recieved my own copy yesterday, and it is just as wonderful as the other two. The lessons are all "bite-sized" for little learners, and the illustrations are beautiful, even the one in question. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected
The explanations were great but I would have expected a bit more of the actual mass for the children to follow along as a guideline. We hadn't looked at the book before taking it to mass so it was a little disappointing. We needed to use the missalette along with the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource, February 3, 2007

I recieved my own copy yesterday, and it is just as wonderful as the other two. The lessons are all "bite-sized" for little learners, and the illustrations are beautiful, even the one in question. There is no look of fear or apprehension on the angels faces, only sadness, which we should all feel at that moment! For helping to teach preschoolers about our Catholic faith, these books are absolutely charming, and you shouldn't hesitate at all in buying them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, February 11, 2009
This review is from: The Mass Book for Children (Paperback)
This is a really cute book that explains the mass very well. I was only a little disappointed that it wasn't more step by step through the mass. I enjoy reading it to my kids before Mass but it is not a follow along with the mass kind of book. I am still looking for a great one of those. I had one when I was a little girl and it is falling apart so I can't give it to three kids to read during church.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem!!, February 27, 2006
This review is from: The Mass Book for Children (Paperback)
I have purchased this book for my children, godchildren, and First Communion Class students! It is so wonderful to find a book that teaches children the truths of our Catholic Faith in a way that is simple yet eloquent. This book does not water down our Faith or dumb it down... The children love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you take a child to church, April 21, 2009
This review is from: The Mass Book for Children (Paperback)
get this book for him first! The Mass for Children so beautifully explains basic concepts of the Mass, as well as dos and don'ts to little children. The book educates and inspires children to do what they are supposed to do at Mass, and for that reason alone is worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily explains what each part of the Catholic Mass means, December 19, 2009

I really like this book for describing what each part of the Catholic Mass means. It is not a follow along book for reciting the Mass prayers, but explains clearly what happens during the Mass and what each part means. I am giving this book to my two nephews for their First Communion next spring.

This little gem of a book will give you tiny lessons to share with your children so they learn how to behave at Mass. A companion to "Just Like Mary" your children will want you to read this one over and over as they learn to love Christ present in the Mass.

Great Book, even handy for me as an adult to brush up on catechesis! I thought it was for younger children. It would be great for 4 years and up.

I had not seen this book before, but was familiar with the illustrator's work on the Little Acts of Grace book. The text of this book is very nice, but a bit wordy in places, however,I was extremely disappointed with the illustration on page 35. It shows Jesus on the cross with blood pouring out from his wrists going into cups being held by two little angels. The expression on the one angel's face is one of apprehension and almost fear like. It is totally too graphic and disturbing and I will not use this book with my students because of it. Too bad to have just one illustration ruin the whole book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for children AND parents!, December 27, 2011

This review is from: The Mass Book for Children (Paperback)
This is a wonderfully written book geared toward children to help them (and their parents) understand what is happening at Mass. It is not a missal, but it goes through all the different parts of the Mass and points out many details for us to pay attention to and explains them so that we can have a greater understanding and respect for what is happening. For example, it talks about the opening procession, points out that Father kisses the altar and explains why (the altar is a special table - a symbol of Jesus.) While I was reading it, it even gave me an appreciation of some of the little rituals and gestures that I take for granted or never had specifically explained. And it gives the proper vocabulary for many things like paten, chalice, venerate and genuflect and explains them with simple definitions.
I think the illustrations are also excellent. Most of them have an illustration of what we see happening at the Mass, which will be juxtaposed with an illustration of the heavenly reality of what is happening. E.g. A close up of a priests hands holding the consecrated host, and then Angels illustrated in "stained glass" style all around it, shown to be praying and worshiping God. And there are little mice characters on every page which add another dimension to the illustration to show what is happening. E.g. In the explanation of the penitential rite, there is an illustration of people in the pews praying, but then there is a little mouse who has a thought bubble, remembering how he pulled his sister's tail and a tear on his face to show he is sorry for what he did that was wrong.

This book is devout, orthodox, and masterfully geared toward a young audience to help instill reverence and awe for the miracle that happens at Mass. I highly recommend!! I am glad to have it for my children (5 and 3 and 0) and will certainly keep it in mind as a great gift for other Catholic families.
