I originally bought Mass Effect on Xbox 360, but before Mass Effect 3 came out, my Xbox died. Since then I've moved on to playing it on PC. I've also purchased a copy of ME1 & ME2 on Xbox for a friend, so basically I've bought ME1 & ME 2 three times haha. I've loved Mass Effect ever since the first one came out so having them now on PC gives me another reason to play through them again. This is my favorite franchise of all time. The story is amazing, the characters are incredibly well written; it just feels like a real world. Also it's pretty awesome seeing your story continue through ME2 and ME3. I've poured countless hours into these games and I've had a great time doing it even with my issues with the ending of ME3, which I still recommend to anyone. I might do a review on that one later but for now, I want to let everyone how to get their Bringing Down the Sky DLC for Mass Effect 1.
Some might not know this but before EA bought Bioware, you could go to the Mass Effect site, register Mass Effect 1 and get a key for a free download of the DLC Bringing Down the Sky, the DLC that introduced the Batarians to the Mass Effect universe. Unfortunately, you can't register the game anymore because the sites have changed and the original Bioware accounts have been turned into EA/Origin accounts. However, fret not! you can still find patch 1.01 & 1.02 at this address [...] and you can download Bringing Down the Sky at [...]. The thing is that in order to install the DLC you need a key. You can contact EA support and ask them to provide you with a key or you can do what I did.Read more ›
Downloading from Amazon was excellent(~6hrs total for ~17gb) for my connection. I've never played any Mass Effect games before but at this price I couldn't pass it up and from all the buzz that has surrounded this series neither should you!
The software downloads and installs pretty easy, but when you go to run it, you get an auto-configuration error (at least with a Win7 system). But the good news is that you do not need to run the autoconfig to get the game to work - here is what you do:
Go to the Mass Effect\Binaries folder and just type "Masseffect" (minus the quotes, of course")
Note: If you are not logged in as administrator, you will need to find the MassEffect file, right click on it and select "run as administrator"
As long as you are there, it helps to right click on the same file and save a shortcut to the file, then drag to your desktop so you can just double click on it in the future
The game will load and you can configure it later on in the menu system.
I have just played for the past 3 hours, no problem! Still forming an overall opinion, but so far, this feels like a pretty great game, well worth the $12 price tag!
UPDATE: Eyes bleary....haven't slept for several days after having been sucked into the game. The story is great, the plot is great, what a wonderful time, and I have not even begun MassEffect2 I got this game as a bundle ME1/ME2 for $12!
ME1 - How long this game takes depends on how obsessive you are about completing the side tasks. I like to do them all, and it takes about 45 hours to clean out the game. What fun! Totally worth the cost. If you are on the fence about this game, go for it! My only complaint with the game is that the mapping could have been more useful. If you have multiple quests, it is pretty easy to get lost, I spent too much time running around looking for doors, etc..... But that is a "nit" in an otherwise great game. WhooHoo! I can't wait to check out ME2!
As always it is a terrible pain trying to get games to activate through Origin that were not purchased on it. In this case I bought the game on Amazon to save a lot of money and then went to activate it all through Origin so that all the files would be put in the same directory and to keep it simple in case I ever bought Mass Effect 3. If you guys want to do the same thing, expect Mass Effect 2 to activate fine but Mass Effect 1 to fail. You'll have to then waste 20 minutes to an hour and create an account on Pogo so that you can link it to your EA account so that you can then get it on your Origin account (Took an hour in my case since Origin's sucky live chat support caused the first person I explained the situation to to have chat issues on his end and he ended the live chat for no reason forcing me to begin again with someone else). This of course makes no sense due to the fact you'll be using Origin's application to run the customer service live chat and they should be able to add the game to your account through their program, wouldn't you think?
So again. Amazon did fine. I've heard people have had issues downloading the game through them in other reviews on here but since I chose a different route I can't blame them. They just saved me nearly $30.

The first game failed to install due to some s***ty DRM. I ended up pirating it after unsuccessfully trying to install it many times. Second game ran fine on origin. Read morePublished 9 months ago by bounty823
