Edit: First time, posting a review on amazon, was not aware I couldn't post urls. I have created a comment in response to the review, you can find the links there.

I originally bought Mass Effect on Xbox 360, but before Mass Effect 3 came out, my Xbox died. Since then I've moved on to playing it on PC. I've also purchased a copy of ME1 & ME2 on Xbox for a friend, so basically I've bought ME1 & ME 2 three times haha. I've loved Mass Effect ever since the first one came out so having them now on PC gives me another reason to play through them again. This is my favorite franchise of all time. The story is amazing, the characters are incredibly well written; it just feels like a real world. Also it's pretty awesome seeing your story continue through ME2 and ME3. I've poured countless hours into these games and I've had a great time doing it even with my issues with the ending of ME3, which I still recommend to anyone. I might do a review on that one later but for now, I want to let everyone how to get their Bringing Down the Sky DLC for Mass Effect 1.

Some might not know this but before EA bought Bioware, you could go to the Mass Effect site, register Mass Effect 1 and get a key for a free download of the DLC Bringing Down the Sky, the DLC that introduced the Batarians to the Mass Effect universe. Unfortunately, you can't register the game anymore because the sites have changed and the original Bioware accounts have been turned into EA/Origin accounts. However, fret not! you can still find patch 1.01 & 1.02 at this address [...] and you can download Bringing Down the Sky at [...]. The thing is that in order to install the DLC you need a key. You can contact EA support and ask them to provide you with a key or you can do what I did. After searching on google for a bit I found a very helpful thread on the BSN forums(Bioware Social Network) [...] with some instructions on how to install the DLC. You can use one of several universal codes they have listed to authenticate it when you attempt to install the DLC.

Also there is a way to fix the crash error you get when you use the launcher to start the game, well, it worked for me at least.
* Download and install patch 1.01 while the game is closed.
* Download and install patch 1.02 while the game is closed.
* Download Bringing Down the Sky and install it with the game closed. When the window asking for the key appears, enter one of the keys listed on the bioware thread I mentioned before. (I personally used 7YVD-LCTT-CS7M-E9LM-YATC. Either do that, or contact EA support and ask them for a key.)
* Right on the Mass Effect shortcut in your desktop and choose Run as Administrator. (I'm running Windows 7 - 64 bit btw)

If you do all that , then hopefully, the launcher won't crash when you click Play. If that still doesn't work, then you can do what others have mentioned in their reviews. (Right click on the Mass Effect shortcut, click, "Open File Location", go to "Binaries" folder and locate MassEffect.exe and use that to open the game directly, you will be able to change your graphical settings on the menu screen.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Deal too good to pass up, just update the game! March 31, 2012

Regarding the issue with Mass Effect 1 crashing when it starts the auto config; all you need to do is update the game to 1.02. No tricks or workarounds are necessary, simple fix. 4 stars for not including the update in the digital download, it's from 2009! Whether that's Amazon's fault or the game publisher, it leaves a bad taste in the customers mouth.

Other comments:
Downloading from Amazon was excellent(~6hrs total for ~17gb) for my connection. I've never played any Mass Effect games before but at this price I couldn't pass it up and from all the buzz that has surrounded this series neither should you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game - You need to know about the bug though March 26, 2012

Got this game from Amazon - Loaded Mass Effect 1 and had the exact loading problem as described in earlier reviews: But here's the work around:

The software downloads and installs pretty easy, but when you go to run it, you get an auto-configuration error (at least with a Win7 system). But the good news is that you do not need to run the autoconfig to get the game to work - here is what you do:

Go to the Mass Effect\Binaries folder and just type "Masseffect" (minus the quotes, of course")
Note: If you are not logged in as administrator, you will need to find the MassEffect file, right click on it and select "run as administrator"
As long as you are there, it helps to right click on the same file and save a shortcut to the file, then drag to your desktop so you can just double click on it in the future

The game will load and you can configure it later on in the menu system.

I have just played for the past 3 hours, no problem! Still forming an overall opinion, but so far, this feels like a pretty great game, well worth the $12 price tag!

UPDATE: Eyes bleary....haven't slept for several days after having been sucked into the game. The story is great, the plot is great, what a wonderful time, and I have not even begun MassEffect2 I got this game as a bundle ME1/ME2 for $12!

ME1 - How long this game takes depends on how obsessive you are about completing the side tasks. I like to do them all, and it takes about 45 hours to clean out the game. What fun! Totally worth the cost. If you are on the fence about this game, go for it! My only complaint with the game is that the mapping could have been more useful. If you have multiple quests, it is pretty easy to get lost, I spent too much time running around looking for doors, etc..... But that is a "nit" in an otherwise great game. WhooHoo! I can't wait to check out ME2!

Does this include all the DLC?
No. It does not include:
Alternate Appearance Packs 1 & 2
Kasumi - Stolen Memory
Equalizer Pack
Overlord
Aegis Pack
Firepower Pack
Lair of the Shadow Broker (in my opinion, the best of the ME2 DLC)
Arrival
