Editorial Reviews

Dr. Maria Montessori's most valuable book.  Every conceivable element of the traditional Mass unfolds before the eyes of children 8 to 15.  36 illustrations assist in answering hundreds of typical questions (asked by adults as well as kids), about Mass.  Narrative, not storytelling, not condescending.  Masterpiece.

This book clearly outlines the beauty and reverence of the Mass in the Extraordinary Form (formerly known as the Tridentine Mass). The items used at Mass as well as the actions of the priest are also explained very simply and beautifully. Even though some of it doesn't quite match up with the Novus Ordo (Ordinary Form), Mass is Mass and reverence and meaning still apply. This book is a blessing for those who are serious about teaching the youth about the reverence needed at Mass.

Explains the subject to adults as well as children in a correct and clear way. Not a lot of verbage, unnecessary I may add, on the subject of the Mass by others whom write on this Sacred subject.

Adults can benefit at least as much as children from this excellent Montessori book - the Gift of Jesus is made evident in a simple and clear manner. The world NEEDS MORE of Jesus and this is a great way to help it happen.

This is a definitive work by Maria Montessori - gently leading children to faith and understanding of the Catholic Mass. A recommended resource.

Maria Montessori's book (published in 1933, republished here) is a clear and concise explanation of the Tridentine Mass (inaccurately named, as this liturgy is an organic outgrowth of ceremonies of the Old Testament). The title of the book itself is somewhat misleading; in fact, it is more appropriately a reading for the average adult who wishes a deeper understanding of the Roman Liturgy as it existed for centuries prior to Vatican Council II.

I attended the old Roman Liturgy weekly, as a young man prior to Vatican II, and ('legally' or 'illegally') for over 40 years since. Nevertheless, many of the liturgical signs and symbols, the ceremonies, the 'furnishings', remained somewhat obscure. As I said, this book provides clear and concise explanations. It is very readable, both by children above a certain age, and everyone else.

I must say, it is more of a 'workbook' for parents who, once having sufficiently digested its contents, can walk their children through it. This is not 1933. It is the rare child that will read even the simplest book today. He (or she) needs object lessons, 'hands on' experience. This book, with its ample illustrations, would be of invaluable assistance in that regard. It would also be helpful to investigate current Eucharistic miracles, a number of which are on DVD's or can be found in the internet.

This is a great book about the Mass. It is written for children but it isn't dumbed down. I think it is a perfect choice for teaching school aged children in a way that they can better appreciate what is happening during each part of the Liturgy.
