5.0 out of 5 stars In 1973 - Before metal woods and hybrids..., June 8, 2010

This review is from: Massacre at Winged Foot: The U.S. Open minute-by-minute (Hardcover)
They played the US Open at Winged Foot. After Johnny Miller shredded the USGA the previous year the course was set up with fairways so narrow you had to walk sideways and rough so deep that just getting it back in the fairway was a good shot. Dick Schapp's minute by minute account of the tournament is must reading for any fan of golf history. The names may not be familiar to some, but these guys played in a slightly different time when golfers weren't quite the rock stars they are today. Mr. Schapp's writing is so good I feel like I was walking the course. This book has my highest recommendation!

5.0 out of 5 stars USGA's revenge, August 25, 2011

This review is from: Massacre at Winged Foot: The U.S. Open minute-by-minute (Hardcover)
When Johnny Miller scorched the Oakmont course with a blistering 63 on the final day the USGA was embarassed, and humiliated. The next years tournament was at Winged Foot and the old boys at the USGA spent the winter making sure that Miller's feat would not be repeated. The course was made next to impossible and the scores skyrocketed. Although the USGA denied that they had tampered with the course it was evident to all that they had,QED. Dick Schaap has documented the travails of the best players in the world in an account that is instructive, informative and funny. If you are a golf fan this is a mandatory read. This year at Congressional Rory McElroy made the Open look like the Quad Cities. Wait until next year at Olympic you won't see another wrecking of par, the USGA will see to that.
