I was very surprised when I got my book that a DVD came free with it. This is a HUGE help for learning the techniques and doing them correctly. Although I think the book does a tremendous job on it's own with full color pics, written instructions, etc, I'm a very verbal learner so this was an even better bonus.

I know the basic massage techniques but this really excelled in breaking up the types of massage and why you'd use each one as in:

postevent massage: right after the athlete has finished a workout or competition, relieves cramping, prevents soreness, etc. I'm most familiar with this one.

recovery massage: at least a day after a workout or competition to reduce soreness, restore blood flow, increase range of motion, promote lymphatic drainage, and reestablish balance and a sense of well-being

maintenance massage-administered in the off-season when not training heavily...to reduce stress, increase strength, increase flexibility etc

injury management: treating injury, decreasing swelling, reduce muscle spasms in tissues, etc.

Then the book addresses the common techniques to do massage...the strokes, motions, using thumb or fingers or hands etc

Full color pics show the planes of the body, the muscles, the joints, the bursa sacs that lubricate various tissues which is actually quite fascinating.

There are full color pics of how to properly stretch to prevent issues with EVERY part of the body...very well done.

But the massage instructions are so clear someone who'd never even had a massage could probably do a pro one. It shows step by step with arrows how the hands are moving on each body part with full color pictures and the video. That's just so well done. And this is done for hte full massage for all types of massages listed above so whether there is injury, stress, soreness etc you know what to do and how to do it. A pro massage is best done on a table with a pillow to lift certain areas of the body (the round massage pillow shown on the cover) but you can also use a rolled up towel and any flat surface (bed, etc.)

Conclusion: This completely breaks down the mystery of massage as to how it's done and why you are using certain movements. Once that is understood the pics make it easy to do and easy to remember how to do it right the next time.

The author tells us that we can train harder, recover quickly, and improve performance if we follow his program of massage for top performance.

The book includes the following:

Part I
Chapter 1. History and Introduction to Sport Massage
Chapter 2. Sport Massage Equipment
Chapter 3. Getting to Know the Muscles
Chapter 4. Preevent Massage
Chapter 5. Postevent Massage

Part II
Chapter 6. Stretching
Chapter 7. Application of Pre- and Postevent Massage
Chapter 8. Injury Recovery Sport Massage
Chapter 9. Sport-Specific Treatments

It shows you how to . . .

# perform both self-massage and partner-assisted massage;
# administer the most effective routines for pre- and postcompetition;
# stretch, warm up, and activate primary muscles;
# treat critical muscle groups for elevated performance;
# speed recovery; and
# minimize injury, pain, and fatigue.

The book includes some amazing stretches you can do that will make you feel great. Lots of color photos to show you exactly how to perform each stretch. Having bad knees, I found the quad strengthener stretches especially useful.

Fact is, there are photos throughout the book to show you and/or a therapist or helper how to do each massage to gain the most effective results.

A DVD is included with the book.

Highly recommended.
