5.0 out of 5 stars Things Change
I think that a band that has been around as long as Weston making independent music is allowed to expand and change. I think this is a great record regardless of comparing it to "Got beat up."

1.0 out of 5 stars Got Beat Up by Bad Massed Albert
I was listening to Got Beat Up that a friend gave me and was like, wow, these fellas are good. They have their thing going. So, I went out to buy some of their other stuff. Lucky me picked this album up and thought it should be good. I put it into the cd player and was so shocked. Only "Summers Over" reminded me of their older stuff. Probably because it was the only one...

Lucky me picked this album up and thought it should be good. I put it into the cd player and was so shocked. Only "Summers Over" reminded me of their older stuff. Probably because it was the only one not sung or written by Mr. Snyder. I mean, I know that artist like to "grow" with each album, but how do you go from punk-pop to beach boy wannabes? So, if you are thinking about buying this album because you liked other earlier Weston albums, you might be disappointed, like me.

5.0 out of 5 stars give it a chance, March 3, 2011
This review is from: Massed Albert Sounds (Audio CD)
A lot of people see this as too much of a departure for Weston. I like most of the stuff I've heard by this band, my favorite records being Got Beat Up and this one. What sticks out about their older records certainly isn't how hardcore and raw they were, it was their ability to deliver super catchy pop songs. In a way they let that ability come through even more on Massed Albert Sounds. If you found out about Weston because of Street Sk8er, the version of "Liz Phair" on this record is perfect. Weston really benefits from the super clean, heavy production. If you can accept that Weston was really just writing catchy pop-punk from the beginning there is no reason why Massed Albert Sounds will disappoint you.

1.0 out of 5 stars What happened to Weston?, May 23, 2005
This review is from: Massed Albert Sounds (Audio CD)
Where did Weston go? I think they've "grown up" and are "taking themselves seriously" and have made a terrible album in a desperate attempt at joining that long gray line of awful contemporary "alternative" music. Enough with the quotation marks already! I found this album in a bargain bin for fifty cents and I was really excited about it. I'm a huge fan of Got Beat Up and Matinee, but had never even heard of this album. After a few listens through, I think fifty cents was too much to pay for this pile of steaming excrement. You can argue that Weston is just trying something new and that Dylan tried something new when he switched to the electric guitar and look what that did for him, etc. I'm not against a band's personal growth. I think any band that has any kind of staying power has to experiment with their sound; however, this album is just awful. Even if it wasn't Weston, it would still suck. If you're into Got Beat Up or Matinee, PLEASE save your fifty cents.

5.0 out of 5 stars MAKES MY TOP 10 EVER !, July 31, 2002
By
dan the man (San Antonio, Tx. USA) - See all my reviews
I First heard Weston on the alternative channel, on digital cable tv. The song was "to some i'm genius" I thought it was one of the best alternative rock songs I had ever heard!! So naturally I set out to buy THE MASSED ALBERT SOUNDS. Well, I put it in and was extremely pleased, as I listened on through until the disk was over(which is very easy to do), every single song was great! I especially enjoyed "my favorite high", the drums and all the music in this song is excellent! They have a great song deicated to Liz Phair, which is another fav. of mine. "you haunt me" is also good, and "Volume hater" is great too! If you want to add a c.d. to your collection, that you will have a very difficult time pulling out of your player, go buy THE MASSED ALBERT SOUNDS! I am still playing it alot, and have owned it over a year. If you like fast-paced alternative/modern rock, this is it, at it's best. I look forward to upcoming music from these guys! Oh by the way, I found it very interesting, that on this record, Weston went in and cut it on the 1st run! No retakes or anything! I am a musician, so I noticed a couple of boo boo's, but it sounds cool really! So needless to say, I would highly recomend this record. It's on my top 10 ever purchased! Go buy it, and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mature pop punk?, November 22, 2001

I love Weston's early releases, those classic pop punk gems will always stir my heart strings.I saw them play live in their underwear many years ago with great friends I don't see much anymore. What a powerful night.Okay,I eagerly snapped up this 1999 release.I was psyched to see what Weston were up to.Well, the tempos are more restrained, there are synths here and there. The songs are all pretty cool, some great-some not as.All in all a strong release, just doesn't grab ya like the early stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice, July 3, 2001
This review is from: Massed Albert Sounds (Audio CD)
ok i've been a fan of weston since like 10th grade, i am now 21 years old, and they have always been in my top 5 favorite bands. their early cd's are amaaaazing, and they capture the essence of high school perfectly, especially "real life story of teenage rebellion" and "got beat up". listening to their old stuff makes me wanna cry. so many memories...but anyway, this album is not as great as those classics, its not even on the same level really. but still, this is a really great album, just in a different way than their older ones. the band has slowed down a bit and mellowed and its being more experimental on this cd. there are some really awesome, powerful songs on here, especially "my favorite high" and "kiss like an angel". old school fans should really try to be open minded and give this one a chance while not comparing it to anything else. old school weston is LEGENDARY, CLASSIC STUFF, but this cd is great too, just in a different way. too bad they had to break up, im going to miss going to their shows more than anything.

1.0 out of 5 stars I have to agree - this ain't the same old Weston!, June 14, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Massed Albert Sounds (Audio CD)
A few years ago, my sister put a couple of tracks from a local PA pop-punk band on a mix tape that she made for me. That band was Weston, and the tracks were from _Got Beat Up_, which I immediately went out and bought. It was catchy, witty, melodic...all the things that good pop-punk bands should be.

Today I was combing the used bins and found _Massed Albert Sounds_ for three bucks. Whatta bargain, I thought to myself...little did I know how wrong I was. It's nearly impossible to believe that this is even the same band, it's that different from their older stuff. It's reasonably well-done, well-recorded, and well-produced, so I'm sure that some people might like it, but I'm not one of them. Yuk!

1.0 out of 5 stars The OLD Weston must have "Got Beat Up", December 21, 2000
This review is from: Massed Albert Sounds (Audio CD)
Yeah, anyone and everyone who says that Weston is not the same band since Chuck's departure has hit the nail on the head. These guys were definitely one of my favorite punk bands out there, til Chuck left and they seem to have picked up that "alternative" sound that EVERYONE has. What happened to the witty, fast-paced, teenage lyrics that made us all love them? I wasn't happy with Matinee, but thought I'd give them another chance with this one. There will be no more chances. I think, at this point, they SHOULD "Just Quit Rock and Roll". Sorry, guys, but ya need to go find Chuck.
