5.0 out of 5 stars Hear the Light, May 17, 2000
By A Customer
I have been bludgeoned by the almighty grooves of the great "X" Man and I love it! Whoa. This is a major dose of reality served in a thick, syrupy groove that sticks to the listener long after the final note stops ringing in your ears. For the enlightened, Doug Pinnick has provided years of inspired creativity and major rock riffage, but for many, he is still a well-kept secret. It's really quite a shame too, because Doug Pinnick and King's X are truly remarkable. This soulful solo offering provides the brutally honest feelings of an individual who faces life's challenges head-on. Each song has a story to tell and is delivered with passion. The album begins with a swirling sermon from the Rev. Herschel Happiness and is an invitation to open your mind and ears. Then Doug begins filling both with some very powerful songs. You definitely understand Doug's piece of the King's X equation after listening to this disc. "Darker" drops some major low end on the situation and songs like "Friends", "Love", and "Supersalad" deal with real issues in a very personal way. "Hey" just totally grinds. "BlindEye" is a marvelous funk rendering. If you like music with a heavy vibe and an honest message - this disc will not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars I bet Doug could take Ty in a fist fight., July 17, 2000
Talk about bass in your face. Like the one word song titles on this album might indicate, Doug wants to get right to the point, and the point is pretty damn bottom-heavy. This album is all groove. Grooves a-plenty, syrupy and thick, with some conservative guitar work that only serves to reinforce the funk. Some quieter moments await you, but for the most part it slams into you like a ton of angry, funky bricks. Its the perfect counterbalance to Ty Tabor's hippy-dippy _Moonflower_Lane_. Not a weak song on the thing, but my faves have to be "Music", the country-funk of "Blindeye" and "Hey", and "Supersalad" which boasts some of the most chilling and psychotic wailing from Doug ever (which was shocking when this thing came out but seems more appropriate with the release of the new King's X) as well as superb drumming from Shannon Larkin (ex Wrathchild America and Ugly Kid Joe drummer).

5.0 out of 5 stars All in a days Groove, December 9, 1998

So, Doug Pinnick has proven his chops, and technical prowess as bassist and vocalist for Kings X. This one is all about the GROOVE BABY! Slide into a trip through the Poundhound, where the Rev. Herschel Happiness resides. The Bass notes on these tunes ride lower than a rednecks' Wranglers. Songs like "Soul", "Red", and "Darker", remind one of Eddie Vedder minus the self-pity, while songs like "Jangle", "Shake", and "Hey" make you just wanna shake your ass. A true unsung rock hero and a genuine cat, check this album out!!!
