2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the trouble.
OK, having been a fan of Doug Pinnick (as a member of King's X) for 12 years I was looking forward to this. But I like only a handful of songs here. The bass is great, but do you really want to listen to Doug's moaning about life? Pass.

I have been bludgeoned by the almighty grooves of the great "X" Man and I love it! Whoa. This is a major dose of reality served in a thick, syrupy groove that sticks to the listener long after the final note stops ringing in your ears. For the enlightened, Doug Pinnick has provided years of inspired creativity and major rock riffage, but for many, he is still a well-kept secret. It's really quite a shame too, because Doug Pinnick and King's X are truly remarkable. This soulful solo offering provides the brutally honest feelings of an individual who faces life's challenges head-on. Each song has a story to tell and is delivered with passion. The album begins with a swirling sermon from the Rev. Herschel Happiness and is an invitation to open your mind and ears. Then Doug begins filling both with some very powerful songs. You definitely understand Doug's piece of the King's X equation after listening to this disc. "Darker" drops some major low end on the situation and songs like "Friends", "Love", and "Supersalad" deal with real issues in a very personal way. "Hey" just totally grinds. "BlindEye" is a marvelous funk rendering. If you like music with a heavy vibe and an honest message - this disc will not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars I bet Doug could take Ty in a fist fight., July 17, 2000
This review is from: Massive Grooves: from the Electric Church of Psychofunkadelic Grungelism Rock Music (Audio CD)
Talk about bass in your face. Like the one word song titles on this album might indicate, Doug wants to get right to the point, and the point is pretty damn bottom-heavy. This album is all groove. Grooves a-plenty, syrupy and thick, with some conservative guitar work that only serves to reinforce the funk. Some quieter moments await you, but for the most part it slams into you like a ton of angry, funky bricks. Its the perfect counterbalance to Ty Tabor's hippy-dippy _Moonflower_Lane_. Not a weak song on the thing, but my faves have to be "Music", the country-funk of "Blindeye" and "Hey", and "Supersalad" which boasts some of the most chilling and psychotic wailing from Doug ever (which was shocking when this thing came out but seems more appropriate with the release of the new King's X) as well as superb drumming from Shannon Larkin (ex Wrathchild America and Ugly Kid Joe drummer).

5.0 out of 5 stars All in a days Groove, December 9, 1998

So, Doug Pinnick has proven his chops, and technical prowess as bassist and vocalist for Kings X. This one is all about the GROOVE BABY! Slide into a trip through the Poundhound, where the Rev. Herschel Happiness resides. The Bass notes on these tunes ride lower than a rednecks' Wranglers. Songs like "Soul", "Red", and "Darker", remind one of Eddie Vedder minus the self-pity, while songs like "Jangle", "Shake", and "Hey" make you just wanna shake your ass. A true unsung rock hero and a genuine cat, check this album out!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars impossible to play at low volume, June 18, 2000

This review is from: Massive Grooves: from the Electric Church of Psychofunkadelic Grungelism Rock Music (Audio CD)
The Poundhound groove is so thick, rich, loud, and deep, you will forget whatever you were doing or thinking before you put this disc in. Think of it as DEEP tissue massage for your brain. How heavy is this groove? On a scale of 1 to 10, it's a 12. Doug, *please* make another Poundhound CD when you get a chance!

This album shakes the foundations. The thickness of the bass is incredible. I am a major King's X fan and I now know what part Doug brings to group. I love every song on this CD. There are very few CDs where you can listen to the whole disc and not skip tracks. I really like the last tune "River". A nice gospel tune!

What is "psychofunkadelic grungelism?" You'll have to buy this CD to find out, and I guarantee you'll love it! Doug Pinnick, the 12-string bass thunder of the innovative power trio King's X, has laid down an ear-pleasing, foot-stomping, hand-clapping set of tracks on an "electric poundation" of massive bass vibes that'll set your whole house quaking. Pinnick's trademark silk-and-gravel vocals impart a variety of moods to the album, lending a funky gospel voice to songs like "Jangle" and "Shake," a bluesy world-weariness to "Soul" and "Friends," a Hendrix-style otherworldliness to "Red." Pinnick's understated guitar work is masterful (he plays all guitars as well as bass). The driving, crashing drum work of Chad Lyons, Jerry Gaskill, and Shannon Larkin expand the vibes on this album to a truly massive, glorious wall of sound. Pinnick's innovative, enormously influential career ought by now to have earned him a prime seat in the first rank of African American rockers, right beside Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. This music is great enough to give him the recognition he deserves. I hope Metal Blade records and Pinnick's fans can get the secret out.

What is "Psychofunkadelic Grungelism?" You'll have to buy this CD to find out, and I can guarantee you'll love it! Doug Pinnick, the bass thunder and soulful vocalist of the innovative power trio King's X, has laid down some truly massive grooves on his first solo effort. The tracks are driven by Pinnic's trademark 12-string bass sound, an "electric poundation" (to borrow another Pound Hound phrase) that has inspired scores of later bands such as Creed. His silk-and-gravel vocals infuse a Hendrix-like otherworldliness into songs like "Love," a bluesy world-weariness into "Friends" and "Soul," an exuberant, hand-clapping gospel feel to "Jangle" and "Shake." Pinnick's guitar playing (he lays down all the guitar as well as bass tracks on this album) is inspired! The drum tracks laid down by Chad Lyons, Jerry Gaskill, and Shannon Larkin round the music off to a perfect finish. Get out of the way, Lenny Kravitz, and let a real artist show you how it's done!

4.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly amazing heavy rock/metal album!, June 28, 2010
This review is from: Massive Grooves: from the Electric Church of Psychofunkadelic Grungelism Rock Music (Audio CD)
This is a band formed by the singer/bass player of legendary heavy rock band KING'S X. It is a bit more heavier than that band, but shares simialrities, as Dug is singing, though plays guitar here. It is muc hheavier than KING'S X, more like many modern metal bands, and just simply very cool and different. Hear this!

An excellent solo outing that isolates and highlights what Doug brings to the amazing trio, Kings X. Thankfully, Doug's refreshing album comes at a time when King's X is at less than it's best. The band seems stretched thin, saving it's better material for solo efforts. That becomes obvious with one listen to "Massive Grooves..." a more than fitting title to this effort. This album is deep and dark, yet melodic. Doug brings his soulful vocals to these raw and base songs that are drenched in de-tuned bass lines and Hendrix like guitar riffs. If you like gut-wrenching bass and thundering grooves, then this is your fare.
