5.0 out of 5 stars Gratitude! : ), September 9, 2010
This review is from: Massive Psychic Trauma (Paperback)
To Dr. Henry Krystal: I am a licensed clinical social worker, with PhD in psychology. I wrote you years ago in regards to your work on Survivor Syndrome which I discovered in your book, Massive Psychic Trauma. I hope/believe I still retain the letter which you wrote in response to my letter of gratitude/inquiry at the time.
I was not aware that you were a Holocaust survivor yourself....my appreciation vastly increases (!). Your work made my own survival possible; I had survived a family trauma which I penned in my book, If Someone Is Killed and the Officials Refuse to Investigate, IS IT STILL MURDER? published by Tate Publishers; authors: Lewis, Maurer and Harness (my maiden name with my two children as co-authors).
The first 'peers' I discovered, were those I found in Israel, then Viktor Frankl M.D. in Vienna, and Andre Weiss, M.D., in Geneva, Switzerland, formerly from Hungary. Although I originated in a small town in Arkansas, U.S.A., I was estranged from family and former friends when my mother was murdered and as Andre Weiss later noted, "Both our mothers were murdered and no one cared." Dr. Weiss was also in the concentration camp.
My deepest regret for the pain you all knew/know but greatest of respect for your having endured and taken the dedicated effort to help others to survive also. I shall forever treasure my book, Massive Psychic Trauma because it was the beginning of my own survival; I also 'lacked the language to explain my emotion,' until I found that book, took it to a clinician and showed him my symptoms. This was before PTSD became known; Survivor Syndrome is a set of symptoms in addition to and far beyond the PTSD dilemma. Thank You! God continue to bless you! S Henry
