I think my title sums up my opinion very succinctly, but I'll elaborate a bit. Even if you're not a fan, anyone paying attention should recognize that Trent Reznor, aka Nine Inch Nails, is a musical force. That his music doesn't fit neatly into any existing genre is evidence of its uniqueness, and his productive longevity (Pretty Hate Machine was release in 1989) is a testament to the quality of Reznor's work. I've been a fan for about 15 years now (WTF?! How did that happen?!), and The Downward Spiral (TDS) is Reznor's best to date. And, as my title indicates, I think it is a very strong candidate for the best album of all time. The only weak track is Big Man With A Big Gun, but, more than the strength of the individual tracks, the compilation is a true work of art. Focusing on any one track is like trying to evaluate a Picasso or Dali based on only a few brush strokes rather than the painting as a whole. When experienced as a whole, in the order the artist intended (yes, tracks are arranged in order for a reason--for artistic effect--and, if you skip around, you lose the effect), this is an outstanding, powerful study in the dark emotions. Outstanding and timeless. Brilliant. (Too bad the guy who composed this masterpiece is gone...)
