Richard Brightfield is nice enough to include not only the probably basic knowledge of aikido but also East Timor's desire for independence from Indonesia in the book.It can broaden our minds by making us aware of the oppression in East Timor and learn about the aikido techniques.

Positives: If you are interested in aikido, you can learn some of its principles in this book, basically, that it is defensive only, and you cannot (therefore) have touraments. Interesting.Negatives: Is it realistic, in any day and age, for a teenager to travel halfway across the world to attend an "aikido conference"? It is especially not realistic now. If you choose the realistic path, of minding your parents preferences to stay home, your adventure ends immediately. No matter what, though, you can never attend the conference, which is a shame, because I was more than curious to see what such a conference would entail, and why my physical presence was worth all of the effort in getting there (it is in Indonesia). The bulk of the adventure is managing your reaction to being on a hijacked plane with some rebels, who may or may not be in the right in the fight against their government. I have fond memories of these CYOA books, but I suspect the later ones tend a greater tendency to phone it in. This one isn't terrible, but certainly not great. |
