2.0 out of 5 stars Unreal!
This was my second book by Kinley MacGregor. I find her writing to be more for the younger reader. This book/story was totally, totally unrealistic and silly, but it was fun. I did smile and laugh. But, I like a higher intellectual, mature story. I won't read anymore by Ms. MacGregor. Added note: She writes detailed intimacy scenes which I like, but without the maturity...

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book. Very Touching, March 18, 2002
This review is from: Master of Desire (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved this book. I read it in one setting. I couldn't put it down. I had read this authors books under another name but was thrilled when I found this book.

This is the story of the most feared knight in the land, Draven and a very willful woman named Emily. We first meet Draven when he and Emily's father are before the king arguing about the on going feud between them. Both blame each other for the attacks on their land. The king decides that in order to make these two come to a peace that Emily shall spend one year in Draven's care and that Draven must never touch her or else he will die. They both agree and Draven gives his vow of honor not to touch her in anger or in lust. Little did he know how hard that vow would be to keep.

Emily is a beautiful woman who longs for a husband and family of her own. Her father is overprotective of her and her sisters. She is thrilled to get the chance to be free for a while and decides to set her sights on Draven. When they first meet he takes her breath away. She decides right then and there that he will be hers and she always wins. Draven is not unaffected by her and its a constant struggle for him to keep his distance. He longs to love her but is afraid the demon inside him will hurt her and drive her away forever.

They must find the laughter and the love they both deserve and bring peace between two families.

Kinely MacGregor makes you really feel the sorrow and the pain the characters feel. She has wonderful side characters that make the book a whole. There is humor, passion, love and tenderness all wrapped up inside.

4.0 out of 5 stars great medeival book, August 5, 2002
This review is from: Master of Desire (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read master of seduction too (the history of draven's brother).
Draven is a famous knight, powerfully built, that manages to intimidate anyone he meets with his fame in battles and stern character. He is a man that talks little, never laughs and keeps his thoughts to himself. When he is ordered by the king to take Emily in his castle he tries to stay away from her as she is the daughter of his enemy and also believes that his rage could prove uncontrollable when it comes to her. But what surprises him is that Emily is not afraid of him as everyone else is. She stands up to him, speaks her own mind and she is determined to get him to marry her! They are attracted to each other but too many obstacles stand between them. Of course, as in every romance they find a way to get through them and live happily ever after.
The humor was perfectly balanced with Draven's tortured past so you couldn't name it a light read not a heart-wreching one. It certainly was extremely easy to read and I couldn't leave it of my hands. Emily is determined, willful and also romantic and sweet. Draven is the typical medeival hero: gorgeous, tough outside but warm for those who know him.
Go out and read it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Made me believe in romance again, May 10, 2001
This review is from: Master of Desire (Mass Market Paperback)
Draven has sworn to never marry and Emily is after a husband. Forced to live together in a unique situation, these two titans clash from the very beginning. But what I loved most was watching their friendship build. There were no stupid misunderstandings that left me rolling my eyes. No childish antics. What we have here is two grown-ups with real problems who come together in spite of their fears and uncertainties and find a lasting love. This book really made me believe that love can conquer all. Curses, family feuds, treacherous villains, you name it. It's been a really long time since I read a book that left me feeling so good inside.

If you LIKE romance. If you like men and strong, competent heroines and most importantly if you like a book that touches all your emotions, then run to the nearest store and do yourself a favor. Buy Master of Desire. You won't regret it.

My only questions now are, will Simon have a book of his own and when's the next one due out? I know I'll be the first in line to get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This years best romance, February 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Master of Desire (Mass Market Paperback)
Take an earl scarred by a brutal past, a heroine who is determined to have him no matter what, an overprotective father, a king with a mission, a brother who wants the earl to be happy, a zany maid and friend, great sex scenes, throw in a little mystery and one of the most original plots I've seen in a long time, liberally sprinkle in humor, tears and a break-neck pace and what do you have? The perfect recipe for a keeper.

With Master of Desire, Kinley MacGregor has shown herself to be a Master of Romance. I can't even begin to recommend this book enough. Do yourself a favor, read a MacGregor novel tonight!

This is the first book of Ms. MacGregor I have ever read! I bought it because the cover looked good! :) If this book indicates what type of author she is on a regulary basis, then she is simply not going to be able to write fast enough for me. MASTER OF DESIRE is probably one of the best books I have read. It has such a great story. It was funny, sexy, had a meaning and wasn't repeditive. Ya know what I mean... There was a story behind the story (the past) and I couldn't wait to find out what it was. Then, there is the story in the future, and I just knew something was up with that wicked brother-in-law! It is nice to have the shoe on the other foot and have the woman chase the man for a change. And Lady Emily is so clever! Her attempts at trying to make Draven, the devil, laugh, made me laugh... how could he not!!! He and his brother are so funny and I really liked the part were they got caught at the river by the boar. He jumped in a tree. Lots of romantic twists and tons of humor! I loved the epilogue of this book also. No, I will not tell you, but if this was a movie... it would be a "feel good" movie. Ya know, if you want a good book, that makes you like the people you are reading about, If you want to laugh or if you want to stay up all night... get this book. Then, you too will be a peeved off that A PIRATE OF HER OWN is out of print! Cause that only leaves you with one book left of hers to read. MASTER OF SEDUCTION

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exquisite Mixture of Passion & Humor . . . ., August 6, 2001
By
Carolyn Christy "Caro" (Fairhaven, Ma. United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Master of Desire (Mass Market Paperback)
Master of Desire by Kinley MacGregor is a MASTERPIECE of a romance. This talented writer has penned an incredible story filled with tragedy, humor and passion. I LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS WONDERFUL STORY!!

Lady Emily has dreamt of finding love. She desperately wants children and yearns to enjoy the joys that marriage has to offer. She is the youngest daughter of an English lord who forbids her from having any freedom. Nor is she allowed to leave her home. So how can she find her knight in shining armour? She is filled with growing despair until a mysterious stranger arrives at her father's estate.

Draven de Montague, the fourth earl of Ravenswood, is a proud warrior. He is undefeated in battle and is the king's champion. He is ordered by the king to take as a ward for one year, the daughter of his enemy. He is aghast at this decree for no woman has entered into his estate for many, many years. He is afraid that the curse will strike if a woman once again resides there at his estate. Every woman who has lived at Ravenswood falls victim to the rage of their lord. Draven acknowledges the rage inside of him and is afraid of losing control.

Emily soon discovers that there is much more to Draven than fierceness and a terrifying reputation. She sees beneath the hard exterior to the man beneath. A man who will not allow himself to believe in love. A lonely man who does not consider himself worthy. She catches glimpses of his goodness and pain deep within and soon becomes captivated.

Despite the fact that Draven has vowed before the king not to harm or touch Emily, she pursues him with unshakeable tenacity. He has never broken his word. His honor is everything to him but then again, he has never encountered someone like Emily.

She was a great heroine! I loved her unwavering determination to make Draven fall in love with her. Nothing or no one would sway her once she had made up her mind to have Draven. It was a nice change to see the woman do the pursuing instead of the man. Combined with her beauty, courage and gentleness, Emily was so funny. She had me laughing along with her.

Draven was the ideal hero. Powerful, handsome and so tortured over his brutal past and the dark legacy bequeathed onto him. Dare he believe in Emily's gentleness and love? Or will the curse resurface and destroy what is left of his soul?

Toss in an unknown villain who is bent on having these two families go to war, hot passion, soul stirring tenderness ad side hugging laughter and you have got a MASTERPIECE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kinley gets better with every book!, February 1, 2001
This review is from: Master of Desire (Mass Market Paperback)
Lady Emily has spent her life dreaming of leaving the home of her overprotective father and having a husband and children of her own. But since the death of her mother and sisters in child birth, her father has refused to see his youngest daughter married. But Emily is nothing if not stubborn and determined. When her father angers the king, Emily is made the king's ward and given to her father's enemy to be held for a year to help cement the bonds of peace.

Haunted by his tormented past, Draven of Ravenswood is a man who has never given a thought to having a wife. His home is the battlefield and given the curse of his father's blood, he wants nothing else. But from the moment he takes Emily into his home, he knows things will never be the same. Oh, and here is where I should mention that he has sworn a blood oath not to touch Emily. Failure to keep his word means execution. But keeping that oath is impossible.

Mix in some incredible humor, poignant scenes that will make you laugh and cry, a wonderful brother who is determined to see Draven married and a cast of funny characters and you have IMHO the best medieval I have read since The Wolf and The Dove. And in my opinion this is even better. I loved Draven and Emily and Simon who I hope gets his own book.

If you like really tortured heroes, strong, competent and likable heroines, sizzling sex, and books that touch your heart, run to the nearest store and buy this book! The only disappointment I had was that it ended and I don't know when her next will be out. Hurry Kinley, I need another of your books bad!

4.0 out of 5 stars Smouldering love story, July 1, 2004

This review is from: Master of Desire (Mass Market Paperback)
Lady Emily has dreamed of being carried away from her father's castle by a knight on a white horse, for her father who is over protective will not allow his remaining three daughters to marry for fear that they may die in child birth like his wife and other daughters.

Draven de Montague, Earl of Ravenswood arrives at the castle to carry away Lady Emily but not for love or passion. He has promised King Henry that he will take away Lady Emily for one year as a peace pact with Hugh, Emily's father but he will not touch her during that year.

Lady Emily is immediately smitten by Draven and vows to marry him for her own purposes and also to create peace between Draven and her father. She does everything in her power to tempt Draven but Draven will not touch her because because he is haunted by his past and also he knows that the King will order his death if he does not return Emily intact after the year has ended.

This was a smouldering love story. You could really feel Draven's passion reaching boiling point but he continues to resist the charms of Lady Emily. Draven was such a gentleman and it was fun to watch Emily chase after him. Kinley MacGregor also writes paranormal romances under her real name Sherrilyn Kenyon. I really love her paranormal romances and decided to find historical romances she has written under the name Kinley MacGregor and I am not disapointed. Both styles of writing are as equally good as the other.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oooh! Yummy!, June 3, 2001

I am so glad I did not give up on Kinley MacGregor after A Pirate of Her Own! This book was positively yummy. Both Draven and Emily were likable characters and you really wanted them to be together. I loved Emily's attempts to make Draven laugh.

This book was seemless and was much more enjoyable that A Pirate of Her Own. I must say that Draven's day dream in the apple orchard was HOT! (I could read it over and over!!) Master of Desire has it all: romance, steamy sex, humor, and even a bad guy in the far background (where they belong). I definitely recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Medieval Romance! Stubborn Lady Melts Tortured Hero's Heart, July 5, 2006

Misuzmama (New York, USA) - See all my reviews

This is my first MacGregor book and most certainly not my last! MacGregor is a great story teller. This book doesn't have the intensity of McNaught, if thats what your looking for, but nonetheless its very touching and beautifully written.

King Henry wants to prevent further feuding between his two Lords. Draven, the arch enemy of Hugh, is forced to take Hugh's daughter Emily as his ward for one year by the decree of the King. The only caveat is that Emily be returned in one year with her innocence intact -Draven must not touch her lest he be held for treason and hanged and quartered.

Emily, upon seeing Draven, decides that he's her ticket out of the confining life her father has forced her to live. She sets her sites on wooing Draven and making him her husband. Draven fights an internal battle with his heart. He knows that he can never let a woman into his heart because of what he is and the secrets of his brutal childhood.

So the story consists of Emily's attempts and setbacks to worm her way into Draven's heart. There are several amusing episodes involving Draven's brother Simon as well. Several conspirators converge to help Emily as she tries her best to get Draven to smile and laugh.

If you liked Ransom or The Bride by Garwood, you'll love this one. For a more serious/intellectual medieval, try Kingdom of Dreams or Almost Heaven by McNaught.
