some underwhelming drawings, September 6, 2009
This review is from: Master Drawings from the Yale University Art Gallery (Yale Art Gallery) (Hardcover)
This book has left me with mixed feelings. The publication values are very high; beautiful reproductions, good quality paper and printing. My primary problem is with the general standard of the drawings themselves. Certainly there are some fine drawings by the likes of Guercino, Lorrain, Jordaens (an attractive goat),Bernini, Gericault (scetch for Raft of Medusa) and Daumier. Even then, the drawings by these artists are not examples of their best work. The bulk of the illustrations are by lesser known artists. While some are attractive (and very few are actually bad), they lack any particular wow factor.
There are many other drawing collections that I would prefer to this issue. If you are interested in well reproduced second string drawings, you might like to investigate this book.
