Learn from a Master Drummer, May 3, 2004
This review is from: Master Drummer Series: Thione Diop Teaches Djembe and Dunun Rhythms of Senegal (DVD)
(...)I bought the John Yost Teaches West African Rhythms DVD last year. That was a good DVD to learn rhythms and then I recently bought the Thione Diop DVD. This one is even better! It sounds and looks ten times better. The notation lights up and and shows me when to hit the notes and there are so many different combination of instruments I can choose from as it plays. The fast ensemble videos show Thione playing solo with the other drums. I have never seen a master drummer before but after seeing the solo intro I want to see one in person. It is amazing that they can play as fast as they do. There are five rhythms to learn on this DVD but there are 5 parts to each rhytm. I've used the other drums before, and I wish I had the other drums to play with, but the djembe is my favorite.

A great DVD from an amazing djembefola, May 3, 2004
This review is from: Master Drummer Series: Thione Diop Teaches Djembe and Dunun Rhythms of Senegal (DVD)
This DVD is awesome! Thione is one of the best djembe players in the world, and we are fortunate to have such a well thought out product to teach us some of his traditional music.
The dvd has much to offer different styles of learners. It is easy to navigate the menu options, to learn individual parts, and to see how all of the parts connect and interact. The sound quality is good, and I really like the players eye view. The karaoke style notation is very helpful. It is an easy way to not get lost in the rhythm. It's also nice that the rhythms play in a loop, making it easy to practice the parts together with a master. The solos that Thione plays are amazing!!!
This is a great product for any serious student of the djembe and dununs. The rhythms are easy to learn in this format, and all of the rhythms are funky and danceable. These rhythms are definitely ones that you would want to play at parties, performances, and festivals. I highly recommend this product, and it is at a great price. Imagine the cost of paying a master drummer to come into your house for hours and hours of private lessons!

Learning from a master, January 11, 2005
This review is from: Master Drummer Series: Thione Diop Teaches Djembe and Dunun Rhythms of Senegal (DVD)
Alejo Balingit has directed and produced another winner in his instructional DVD series. This Thione Diop DVD is easy to navigate and use. Being able to combine instruments as one wishes within each rhythm is a definite plus. Neophytes will find parts easy to learn in the slow mode, then can progress to playing them up to tempo. Seeing notation as the rhythm is played can help the learning process. More experienced players can learn new rhythms or study the subtle differences between Senegalese versions and the Guinean versions of familiar ones. The ensemble playing provides excellent background against which to practice soloing.
