4.0 out of 5 stars value of self realisation, August 31, 2003
By
This review is from: The Master Game: Pathways to Higher Consciousness (Consciousness Classics) (Paperback)
De Ropp was involved with the early years of the Gurdjieff-Ouspensky teachings.

What life game do you want to play ? This book suggests that there are deeper and more fulfilling options available than the default ones based on money, power or hedonism that education and social conditioning can sometimes provide us with. The master game is a life course involving a systematic attempt to develop self knowledge. Its hazards are not wisely ignored but its rewards are beyond the ordinary also...

I have found De Ropp's idea of "Inner Theatre" a great help. Our minds seem to set up miniature virtual ego-work laboratories - one imagines oneself in situations and plays out scenes. To him this is an aid to knowing oneself. I still remember the feeling of grand adventure through seeking deeper awareness this book wafted my way.

I first read The Master Game in the early 1970's. It had a tremendous influence on me at a critical awakening time in my life. I still remember some of the passages and have always credited it with being the first step among many on the road to self realization. I purchased this last copy as an introduction to true consciousness for my daughter. I recommend it to any serious thinkers seeking to take a first step.

5.0 out of 5 stars Master Game Revisited, July 6, 2009
This review is from: The Master Game: Pathways to Higher Consciousness (Consciousness Classics) (Paperback)
Read this when I was 23. It directed me to the most fascinating reading and line of study of my life, one which I still ardently pursue today. As soon as I saw the reference to "Top Cock on Dung Hill" I know I was guilty as charged and set out to reclaim my life. I have now reordered it and rerreading it just to see if the flavor is the same as after my original reading of it, and after having read so much more by so many more similar authors who write about the same topic.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Golden" ideas that..., May 13, 2009

remain cherished even today from my past. This is one of the essential "guides" that thoughtfully and gently assist anyone in their quest to know and understand themselves, the impact of the decisions they make, and the influences of thier culture that inhibits their exploration. While "The Warriors Way" is a bit dry and more about his life history, it makes a good companion to "The Master Game" in that it shows how he lived out his "Master Plan" in his life. Nothing like examples to light the way ! Buy it, read it, and pass it on to someone you value !!

5.0 out of 5 stars simple, vast and powerful, December 14, 2011
This review is from: The Master Game: Pathways to Higher Consciousness (Consciousness Classics) (Paperback)
This is an incredibly written book that casts a wide net. Drawing from history, anthropology, medicine, psychology, and, in particular, Western and Eastern spirituality, de Ropp has written that is easy to read and that makes a powerful argument: the need to attain higher consciousness. He looks at the various ways scholars and thinkers, religious and non-religious, have approached the concept of higher consciousness in order to provide an easy to understand model for the reader.

This book has the potential to change lives and highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memories of my days at Cal, October 27, 2011

This review is from: The Master Game: Pathways to Higher Consciousness (Consciousness Classics) (Paperback)
I remembered being impressed by this book when I was at Cal. So when Bobby at Max's told me about his men's group on spirituality, I bought a copy for him, thinking this book would be a welcome addition. There's a lot more going on in this world than Yahoo news would have us believe.
