3.0 out of 5 stars Has a few of the funkiest cuts from Duke
How can you not love the explosive funky Latin hooks of "Look What You Find?" Such a crazy opening for one of the Duke's funkiest albums! This is followed by a tastefully funky pop ballad of "Every Little Step I Take," a playful funk tune "Game," and a more reserved R&B dance song of "I Want You For Myself." I grew up on bands like Earth Wind and Fire and the Ohio Players. I loved jazz too. This guy was my favorite though. His influences spanned R&B, Rock and Roll and classic jazz. In the seventies and eighties his music was on fire. It was a combination of all the genres he'd already "mastered" in the music business but was most seductivley and "movingly"- if it must be labled- Funky R&B (spot me some jazz and a dash of rock and roll though). "Master Of The Game" was my second dip into this man's artform. It's Probably my favorite (I don't know, George has a lot of very special stuff) I'm finally repalacing my vinyl version of "Master Of The Game" with it's digital incarnation. "Try Don't Let Go", and "Brazilian Love Affair". If you already know him and wonder if he still has "the touch" get "After Hours". Trust me, You'll feel it.

4.0 out of 5 stars p-funk?, April 27, 2005
This review is from: Master of the Game (Audio CD)
this is a very good CD

but to call games P-FUNK (Andre' S Grindle "Funk Meister" Bangor,ME.) makes me wonder if he remembers what the P in P-FUNK means. games is good but it aint P-FUNK. MR.Duke is beyond discription talented beyond words.

he has better stuff(wont let go) but you wont be disapointed.

his early stuff shows his real talent

he can also hang a degree in music on his wall next to his gold albums.this man is damn good see him if he comes your way

5.0 out of 5 stars George Duke-Master Of Diversity!, August 5, 2003
This review is from: Master of the Game (Audio CD)
"Master Of The Game" is filled with many hard-edged funky
moments such as the latin groove of "Look What You Find",the
slamming P-Funk of "Games" and the elongated "The Alien"and the Carribean flavored instrumental jam "Dog Man".But George Duke mixes it all up too on the Earth,Wind & Fire sounding smooth groove "Every Little Step I Take",the dancable, modern R&B of "I Want You For Myself" and the commercial-sounding but fun
pop of "I Love You More".A great album, filled with great hooks
and loops for modern-day DJ's and samplers and ideal for
casual listening because,as always,Duke always gets the job done!

"I want you for myself" is the signature tune on this CD. A great value for the money...you can purchase this for $5-7/US. Get your copy and join the rest of us...you have no choice...you must comply...resistance is...hmmm...I'd better be careful on that one...the Borg might get me!!

Five stars!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rockin' funk, oh yeahhhh!, February 8, 2006
This review is from: Master of the Game (Audio CD)
Josie James and Lynn Davis were two of the hottest voices on the planet. The opener, "Look What You Find" still gives me a monster rush like it did back when I bought the vinyl in '80. That song alone is worth the price of admission, and the stellar musicianship and kickin' percussion really pull it all together. This has long been a favorite.

How can you not love the explosive funky Latin hooks of "Look What You Find?" Such a crazy opening for one of the Duke's funkiest albums! This is followed by a tastefully funky pop ballad of "Every Little Step I Take," a playful funk tune "Game," and a more reserved R&B dance song of "I Want You For Myself." These cuts are full of catchy funk hooks that you will keep listening for a quite a long time --- no wonder this is among the most commercially successful albums of Duke. The rest of the album is good stuff, but not quite as memorable as the first four.

In short, Duke surrounds himself with such an immensely talented musicians that whatever he ends up producing (jazz, funk, R&B, etc.) really shows their caliber. While this is not Duke's best R&B/funk oriented album, it is worth a listen if you have not had the pleasure of getting down with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars He is STILL the "Master"..., June 12, 2002

I bought this LP when it was released and had been exposed to George's "From Me to You", and "Follow the Rainbow" which both had me amazed at his talent. Master of the Game was another amazement for me as George produced yet another gem. Josie James and Lynn Davis were (and still are) the strongest set of lungs I've ever heard on background vocals, Ndugu was (and still is) kicking on the drums, then in came the young Sheila Escovedo (later Sheila E) who slams some serious latin jazz percussion on top of "funk". This man is no joke...he is deliberate, concise and chameleon-like in this ability to blend various types of music. He is so rarely recognized for his true genius it is extremely disappointing to me. This one definitely deserves a place in the collection.
