The Trailmaster San Mai Steel knife is one of the strongest and sharpest knives that Cold Steel Makes. The Kraton handle is durable and slip resistant. The tang keeps the user in control of the blade. I have used this knife for cutting meats only. However, the blade maintains the edge and it cuts through flesh like butter.

The blade is easy to sharpen, using an Apex Pro Edge. One negative is that the blade does tend to scratch easily. However, a blade polish helps mitigate a lot of that. The sheath is durable leather and it is secured through a belt loop for vertical carry. A snap keeps the knife in place.

San Mai steel, unlike Aus 8 or Carbon V, is a sandwich of two different steels which give durability and flexibility. The temper line allows you to distinguish it from basic knives. Though the outlandish demonstrations by the company seem far fetched, these knives are capable of cutting thick rope or chopping through bone. This is mainly designed as a combat and utility knife. However, it is not exactly an easy knife for daily carry. I see it more for hiking, hunting or camping.

Though the company only covers this with a one year warranty, I doubt you'll ever need it.

cold steel trail master sai mai is not a good survival knife, had this knife for 3 months now, looks great, feels great, easily out shines all my other knives.

however. having taking it out to the forest for 3 days, got back home, it is scratched absolutly everywhere, the fine polish it came with, is gone, there's long scratch marks, and messing scratch marks, the sheath will scratch the knife too, having taking it in and out alot of the times, however, the knife is very sharp, sharpest knive I currently own, but, at home, after the trip, there's a small chip at the edge, I have no idea how it got there, or when, but if you rub your finger nail along the edge, (not against the edge), you can feel the dent, also if you view it on an angle, you can see it. it's very tiny.

It cost 5 times as much as some of my other knives, all i can say after buying this, dont use it, just keep it as a good collection knife, dont even take it out of the sheath or put it back in, coz doing that will scratch the knife.

pro:
very shining polish
very sharp
good quality
good weight

con:
easily scratched
sheath can cause damage
can chip
hard to re-sharpen due to it's special ground edge

I bought mine from a non Amazon source for $215. First I'll cover the bad. This is the only complaint about this knife. The sheath sucks. This knife is worthy of a leather sheath.
Now the Good.
Pleasing to look at, this knife is just gorgeous
San Mai 3 blade
Covex Edge
Extremely sharp out of the box
Stainless Steel
Tried and true design

Speaking of price, I wouldn't pay over $230 for this knife brand new. I also would not buy the AUS8 San Mai 3 version, AUS8 sucks in a knife with over a 4 inch blade. its too brittle and will chip on you big time.

I just bought the San Mai III Cold Steel Trail Master Bowie Knife. I also bought a custom fitted handmade Rhondo leather sheath for it as well.

First, I will give a brief reply about the scratched blade comment that a reviewer made. My input is this:

If you use a knife...Any knife...out in the woods or in a survival or even combat situation, and you bring the blade home with you and it has No scratches ir scuffs on it, then you either did not use it as much as claimed, or you didn't use it at all.

Don't be worried about scratches on a knife that you have used. Real high quality made knives, unless you bought them as wall hangers or display knives, and you take them to use them, they are going to get scratched up and scuffed up. But just because a knife gets scratched, does not mean that it's not a high quality made knife. It just means that you used it, which is what knives are Made for...to Use.

And those scratches can be removed easily with some Flitz, a little elbow grease, or a belt grinder with whatever grit finish you like. Then suddenly Boom...your knife is shiny again!

I have the Trail Master Bowie also in sk-5 high carbon steel. I never heard of one being made with AUS 8 stainless steel, as one commentor suggested.

I have inserted my San Mai III TM knife in and out of the sheath now at least a few dozen times trying to break the new leather sheath in. And not once has that scratched the knife. So I am a little concerned why one commentor's knife was scratched just from it going in and out of the sheath.

But still, again, any knife is going to get scratches with use!! San Mai III stainless steel doesn't make a knife a Super Knife...it doesn't prevent one from getting scratched over use or time.
