I bought one of these for the shed in my yard. Not that I was expecting 'Grade A' security from a combo lock, but this one suffers from remarkably poor implementation. To set your own combination, you remove the plastic combination wheels, exposing four metal cylinders, each marked with a red striped notch. When all four are aligned with the 'Master' logo, the lock opens. The main flaw in this design is that the combination wheels are made from plastic. To break this lock, you only need to cut and remove one of the plastic wheels and align the red notches.

If the combination wheels were made from metal, this lock would actually be pretty nice for what it is meant for, but in its current incarnation, Master Lock might as well have manufactured the whole thing out of plastic.

Lock was wonderful until it literally froze up.

The dials are made of plastic. And for some unknown reason to me the dials seemed to have magically welded themselves together. Thus, rather than moving independently as they should, they move all together and there is no way to open the lock if it's closed, or close it if it's in the open position.

Once again, it's literally as if the plastic pieces are welded together. The lock was used in a position where it received a high level of sun UV rays and this could be the cause of the plastic welding together. It did occur gradually until one time I went to use the lock and it literally could not be used anymore.

So I would say, based upon my experience, avoid high sunlight conditions with this padlock.

I would like to provide a review of this item. I purchased it to use on my rented locker at Gold's Gym and it turned out to be the VERY best choice in padlocks. When you're working out at the gym; you don't want to take time fumbling for a combo number or finding a key in your bag - this was just the answer. I just set the combo to be something super easy for me to remember; using all letters (It has number AND letter wheels) and its a super quick 'open' to my locker. I work out during lunch so saving time is of the utmost. The letters are easier to remember than a number combo for me but, as I said earlier; it does come with number wheels too. You can use both if you want to also - with letters and numbers in your code. Very sturdy, colorful enamel Masterlock. I would recommend this lock to anyone looking for high quality and really reasonable price. I'm happy I purchased it.

I bought this a month ago after someone suggested my normal padlock wasn't secure enough. But when unlocked, it easily falls apart -- there's really nothing holding the end cap on. So one day I opened my gym bag and it was a collection of plastic wheels and two pieces. The combination was scrambled, and I spent ten minutes getting it back together (which I suspect most people couldn't do). I have little confidence in it, and since you'd have to close it and spin the wheels each time you put it back in your bag to kep it from falling apart, it's too much trouble. Normal locks are safely left unlocked. So I'm going back to my tired old padlock.

I'm not really concerned with having something I can spell a loved ones name with. All I need is something I can set a combination to, lock, and if I'm lucky, remember it later and retrieve my stuff from the gym locker. Unfortunately this one seems to stick a lot and I'm afraid it'll eventually stop opening. Not very confidence boosting, so I'm going to be searching for a replacement to start using in case my premonition of this one is correct.

I agree with the last review. I bought it to keep the kids out of the chicken house. This lock falls apart easily and can change to a combination you don't know. This happened twice in the first few times. The idea that you can set your own word combination is appealing but the pitfalls far outweigh this one benefit.

I wish that additional letter wheels had been included with the lock instead of additional number wheels. You are limited in the words that you can use by the fact that certain letters are on the same wheel and can't be used. Otherwise the lock works fine.

Bought 2 of these, set the combinations and tested them, and two weeks later neither will open. They will have to be cut off and replaced with something that works.

What an ingenious idea. No more trying to memorize random numbers. It's easy to create your own combination. Just slide the wheels on. You get to choose from letters, numbers and characters. Not all letters are represented, though.

I use this lock for the gym. I haven't gone for awhile, but I still remember the combo -- my own creation that makes sense to me! I can't tell you how many combination locks I've had to toss because I no longer had the combination.

This little lock fits on the locker at the gym just fine and is secure enough for locker room purposes.

The lock is super easy to set up and easy to remember your combination. OK it won't be a long word but at least YOU set it up and change the combination anytime you need to. it is NOT a SUPER high security lock (not recommended for locking your store front gate or your bike but the lock can't be slim jim open. You need the combination to open AND CLOSE the lock (not a snap lock) The to set the combination, remove the cap where the shackle goes into the lock, the wheels will come out and place in the new combination with the assorted wheels. can be combine with other Master Lock 1534D Wheels of different colors if you choose to do so (assuming that you have purchase other color locks)
