5.0 out of 5 stars Master Lock 2-Inch Shrouded Set-Your-Own Combination Padlock #177D
"Margret, forget the keys!"

This is a nice 'hefty' lock that eliminates the wad of keys that's probably already in your pocket. Pick your favorite four numbers and never forget your combo. Just be sure to put the little tool (a specially made key that enables you to change your combo) somewhere where you can find it.

This is great for peeps who...

Count me in as another user that couldn't open this lock after it had been outside for a little more than 1 year (bought it on Oct 2008). Yes, I wrote down the combination and it worked several times before. It was used to secure my circuit breaker box which is on the outside wall of my garage (go figure why the builder don't put it inside!) I only opened it when I had to reset a circuit breaker that was tripped and last time I successfully opened the combo using my written combination is when I had to turn off the breaker to replace my kitchen ceiling light fixtures. I was surprised when I cannot open the lock the other day (to reset a breaker) using the same combination that I have always been using. Needlessly to say I am not happy with the thought of additional expense and inconvenience of hiring a locksmith to open this malfunction lock...

Then I had an idea to look online for help and found out how easy it is to pick this lock if you happen to have the right tools (paper clip or a thin piece of metal). I first tried the paper clip method for about 15 minutes and gave up. Then I found a video clip using a thin piece of metal and bingo! The lock opened right up after trying for about 10 minutes... I have never picked a lock before and definitely won't try to pick one that is not mine, and you shouldn't too. This is way too easy even for an amateur like me! I can't believe it! What's the point hardened steel and all these security feature to prevent cutting, prying when all you need to open this lock is a paper clip or a thin piece of metal? This lock's internal mechanism is the same as the Master Lock Model #175 and it looked like this simple lock picking method has already been discovered since 2006. I can't think of any good reason why Master can't come up with a new design that can resist this type of picking in 3 years! I definitely won't be buying another Master Lock again!

This is a pretty big lock that might be good for anything else except as a gym lock. I had hard time closing and opening it in a gym. After several attempts, I finally got it to close. If you're looking for a gym lock, you might not want this item.

I bought four of these locks for an enclosed trailer.
I like the lock because you can set your own combintion, one easy for me to remember.
The chance of someone getting on this with a set of bolt cutters is almost impossible as far as I can see.Being shrouded is a must for me.

I've used these products for several years and they work quite well.
Every now and then I've had a problem where one may not open say one every 1-3 years out of 12-15 locks which are out in
elements 24x7x365 days of the year.

Very pleased with this lock. It is solid and meaty-- it is much larger than the picture leads you to believe, a fact I like. Only drawback is the little key required to recombo it-- don't know why they didn't just use the depressed shackle method most wheel tumbler combo locks use.

Very pleased with this lock (I purchased 3). Using them on a cargo trailer to store construction tools.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best gym lock., October 28, 2010

This review is from: Master Lock 177D Shrouded Set-Your-Own Combination Padlock, 2-Inch (Tools & Home Improvement)
I upgraded my gym lock from the regular Master Lock that you see in every locker to this one and I am glad I did the change. Let me start off by saying that I got this lock mainly because I needed a lock that I could put in the gym locker and not worry about it being clipped overnight. The combo feature was also a must because carrying a key while working out is just asking for disaster.

My main concern prior to buying this lock was that it might have been too big to be usable. Unlike the other reviewer, this lock fits perfectly for my gym's lockers, almost too perfect. So buyers think twice about this.

So after three years or so of owning this lock, all I have to give is positive feedback:

-My lock was never clipped (because they couldn't) while countless of other regular locks (not shrouded) in my gym were clipped.
-The combo I set stayed, unlike other reviewers. But I only used the lock indoors.
-The way that it opens (you need to get the combo right and push it up) prevent people from messing around with your lock and guessing the combo.

So overall, if you need a lock that offers more protection and will remain indoors all the time, this lock is the one you need to buy.

It is the best in the market , hard to tamper with , and very easy to use .
I use it outdoors , we open it 10 to 20 times a day , this thing lasts for 6 to 9 months outdoors between -30c & +35c . if you use it indoors , it lasts for ever .

Great addition to 2 other shank lengths available. I use mine on the back of trailer ramp. Great outdoors, marine lock. Mine was dragged for several miles on highway, still opened fine and continues to work. These are strong locks-I have 12 of them. NO KEYS! Combos can be changed in 2 minutes and all keyed the same.
