Customer Reviews

I immediately returned it.
Charlie's_Dad
There was a broken plastic piece inside the thing, and it was even less functional than the first one.

I used this to lock our kayaks up when we were dropping off cars and it worked very well.

At the advice of the NY times review I purchased two of these locks. One didn't work, so I returned it, and got another that didn't work, and for exactly the same reason: the PROBLEM is that the "release" button -- the larger button on the right hand side of the image -- is a tiny, fragile plastic lever arm that holds the retraction spool in place with a hook measuring at most 3 mm. On one of the two locks, it arrived already broken, and on the second, snapped immediately. The result is that the cable does not retract, just flops around. You have to hand-thread it back in, with the spool wheel jamming on the broken fragments from the lever arm which are bouncing around inside the lock. This is an example of extremely poor design, with the key moving element, the one subject to the most stress and use, made of cheap, flimsy material. Master products are usually excellent, but this is a deeply disappointing bomb.

I bought this to lock my helmet to my motorcycle. I just needed something light and easy to store and not super heavy duty. This fit the bill exactly.

pros: very useful for travel. Sometimes you want to leave all of your valuables in a hotel room, but do not want to lock up each suitcase individually, or repack each bag. I find that with this lock, I can easily put my clothes and valuables in the closet, and then lock the closet door shut with this lock. The cable is quite long and thin, so it can wrap around handles and inside holes. You can also lock your suitcases to a bar in a train or to a chair if you are traveling but would like to go to sleep.
cons: only con is that the lock is not very small.

Works great, nice and small. Great price. Do not buy anything shorter - even 3 ft gets eaten up quickly. I would recommend this to anybody wanting to lock their skis on the slopes.

I purchased one of these at a local hardware store. As soon as I got back to my car, I opened the package to check it out, and was surprised to see how much of the lock is made of plastic. Not just the outer housing, but the mechanism to retract the cable and the part that actually holds the metal cable end are both plastic. By the looks of it, a good hard yank would break it and tear the "locked" cable right out. A hammer and/or screwdriver would definitely finish it off with little fuss. I didn't bother to test that though, because one of the plastic bits was already broken and moving around inside. I immediately went in and exchanged it for a second one in the store, and when I opened it: same problem. There was a broken plastic piece inside the thing, and it was even less functional than the first one. The "retract" button on the side of this one was jammed shut, and the cable would pull out, but not retract. Two in a row with broken internal parts before they even came out of the package was enough for me - I returned it and will look elsewhere for a lock that isn't mostly plastic.

I'm surprised Master Lock puts their name on this piece of junk; I don't know how they can market something as a security device when it's mostly plastic and so low quality that internal pieces are breaking on its way to the store.

Got this as a ski lock, but it will serve as a nice, easy to carry bike lock too. Great price!

While this isn't a high-end lock, it is a good device to use as a deterrent for crimes of opportunities - leaving a bike completely unsecured so a thief can walk up to and then away with it.
It is easy to use, therefore it will get used more often than the cumbersome coil-type locks I've owned in the past.

Perfect for skis and snowboards when on the slopes. Also the length is great, more the better in my opinion. This comes with 3ft while others are 2ft, and belive me your going to happy with the extra foot for more flexibility on where you can lock your gear. Also, easily small enough to put in your pocket when not in use. It seems solid and secure enough for my needs. Of course "where there's a will, there's a way" so to speak, it seems that potential theives would go after the many unlocked skis I see at all over the place at the slopes rather than mess with a locked set... it just makes sense! ;)
