This review is from: Master Lock 8122D Combination Cable Lock, 6-Foot x 1/2-Inch (Tools & Home Improvement)
This product did its job as described for a period of one year. After that the entire combination lock assembly fell apart into about 10 different pieces. It was then I learned that most of the assembly was made of plastic! This should have lasted longer. Save yourself the trouble and expense: go to the hardware store, buy a padlock and chain, and be done with it. It will probably cost the same as this thing, but will last for 10 years without falling apart.

This cable was cut and my brand new bike stolen from in front of my house less than a week after buying it. Note that SOME Master Lock bicycle lock products offer an anti-theft guarantee...but NOT their cable locks! That should tell you something about what they themselves think about this product of theirs. See the locks that Master Lock recommends (and their anti-theft guarantee) here:
[...] Lesson learned: don't cheap out on a bicycle lock, especially if you have a nice bike. Junkies WILL steal it because cable locks are so easy to cut, and expensive bikes are easy to sell for a quick $20 or $40 in cash. I would give this lock zero stars if I could!! Needless to say, when I replace my bike, I will not be buying this bike lock again, but will likely buy one that offers an anti-theft guarantee.

Can't for the life of me figure out how the thing mounts or is stored on the bike once you get the damn thing on. Who writes the assembly
directions for these things? Is that job outsourced too? English people! Plain English!

My bike was stolen right before my eyes. It took some junkie less than half a second to cut through the cable and ride away on MY custom built mountain bike. They claim it's cut resistant, but this lock resisted nothing. ...almost as if it wanted to be cut. If you're going to buy this lock then you better start saving for a new bike. Oh yeah, AND the combination mechanism is a total pain.

This arrived on time, and works as advertized. What else is there to say? I did find the lock combination wheels a bit "stiff", but a little working them around seemed to loosen them up well enough.
Good solid cable lock, decent price.

I got this and I suspect a thief would have to be there with a hack saw for quite a while to saw through this cable: I always lock my bike up in a very visible spot right out front where I stop.
I dont use the bracket when not in use: I just coil it around the handlebar support and use 2 twist ties to hold the cable coiled neatly; never bumps me while I ride Be sure to thread through the frame and front wheel and use another U-lock to secure the back wheel to your frame

Hard to use and very insecure,
This review is from: Master Lock 8122D Combination Cable Lock, 6-Foot x 1/2-Inch (Tools & Home Improvement)
I can't recommend this lock at all, it basically failed the third time I used it, and I was able to break it open with a small pair of pliers.
I bought one of these locks because it looked sturdy and was quite cheap. There were no instructions about how to mount the lock on your bike, but I eventually worked it out. The cable is coiled quite tightly, and is very hard to stretch around a bike and railing, especially if you want to lock up one of the wheels too. The third time I used it, I was unable to unlock it. I had set the combination the first time I used it, and hadn't changed it. I tried a few numbers each side of the combination for each dial but it none worked. I ended up cutting the cable with a small pair of pliers, which took around 3 minutes. I don't think these locks are very secure, as anyone with decent pliers or a bolt cutter could have done it in about less than 30 seconds. I managed to get the lock open later by going through all the numbers. The number that opened it was very different to how I had set it. It looks as if I accidentally turned the dial which allows you to set the combination while trying to get the cable through my spokes. Then when I closed the lock and moved the dials to relock it, I was actually setting the combination to something random. This lock is difficult to use, easy to use wrongly, and very easy to break open. Don't buy it.

This is a substantial lock with a nice hanger. In use, it's very stiff and can be unwieldy if you have to weave it into something tight. It would be better if it was a little less springy and had a velcro strap holding it in a coil. The tumblers are a little tight when there is tension on the cable. You have to push the two parts together a little in order to turn the number wheel. Otherwise, it gives peace of mind and seems to be ruggedly constructed.

A good and sturdy bike lock. It does take a little reading to figure out how exactly to install this on your bike (the directions are pretty poor), but once you manage it, it works well.
The only serious downside is that it sticks out from the bike pretty far. Make sure you have enough space on your bike, before purchasing. |
