I bought several of these locks to secure my kayak, canoe and motorboat after someone stole my canoe right out of my backyard. The big advantage of this lock is that the cable can slip through a small opening, like a dock cleat or the pre-drilled hole in the bow of my kayak. The locks worked fine for the first year, but after a year of being outside the lock corroded to the point where I couldn't even insert a key in the lock. No amount of WD-40 or Liquid Wrench would loosen it up so I was forced to cut the cable. That leads to the next concern. Using nothing more than pliers and my long-handle garden pruners, I managed to gnaw my way through the cable in about 15 minutes. I would imagine that with better tools the cable could have been cut much quicker, so it's not a high-security device; I think it would provide a reasonable deterrent though for all but the most determined thieves.

I bought four of these for my game cameras and Amazon delivered very quickly - as usual.
I replaced my homemade locking cables with these and they are PERFECT for my Moultrie game cameras. The cable went into the holes perfectly. The 3/8" cable locks are too big, these were a perfect fit - not too tight, not too loose. The only drawback is that they will not come keyed alike when ordered from Amazon. Maybe go to a local store that carries these and try to find matching sets. I had no luck locally. You might get with Masterlock if you want them keyed alike, but the price I paid for them here, I can and will carry four different keys.
They are easy to work...put in the key, turn the key (to unlock), which opens the hole so the cable can go in, while the key stays in the unlocked position, put the cable in the hole, then turn the key (to lock) and remove it. You can still pull the cable tighter, but you can't loosen it up. Great for game cameras.

The 1 star reviews bothered me so I bought with caution. I was glad I took the chance. There are easy work-arounds to all of the 1 star complaints. I use it to secure my trail cam. I works really well.

First, yes, the cable does slip but does so on purpose. The cable is made so you can lock the cable and then slide the lock up the cable and get it real tight against the tree or pole. But, it only slips one way. Good luck trying to loosen it. This helps because for bolt cutters to work, they need to get the cable well into the jaws. When the cable it tight against a tree or post, it's hard to do that. You can also go online and learn to pick any key and tumbler lock in a few minutes (I know because I forgot my combination and needed to get a lock off of my trailer). This lock has a guard and mechanism that voids those lock picking methods.

Now for the next two most bothersome complaints. The lock will rust like most inexpensive locks. The key would be better if it was made of a stronger steel. Combine the two and you get a broken key. So when you get your lock, WD40 the key and work the key a few times getting oil into the tumbler mechanism. Do this at least once a year. I haven't tried spraying WD40 down the lock opening. I'm afraid that might get lubricant on the cable and allow slippage in the wrong direction. So I just spray the key and make sure the oil is going only where I want it. I haven't bent or broken my key yet. I was also careful to memorize which way it turns to unlock. Another nice feature is that the key stays in the lock when in the unlocked position, so it won't get lost.

The cable allows me to wrap around a large tree, through the housing back through-holes and then through the housing door latch holes.

My key snapped off in the lock this past weekend, after using the lock off and on for about two years. I got a bit worried as I was stuck wondering how to unlock it.

I took out my pair of linesman pliers and, to my surprise, it snipped the cable without any effort.

Based on the weak key and the ease of cutting through the cable, I will not buy this type of lock again.

I was encouraged by the number of positive reviews for this product, however I was very disappointed. I ordered two of these and just received them today, and I have already entered a return for them. The problem is not the lock or cable itself, as that part appears to be sturdy enough (I was just going to use them to secure two chain link gates on my property), the problem is the key. The keys are very cheaply made, the material is extremely pliable. I inserted the key into the lock to free the cable, turned it, and the key broke off into the lock, without unlocking the cable. This was not after several uses, this was the very first turn of the key. (I am a 20 something woman, not The Hulk, so I know it was not due to excessive force). Now the entire unit is useless because of the broken key. I am not even bothering to try to use the other one as I imagine the results will be the same. Waste of time and money.

The 8417D is an impressive cable lock. The cable diameter is actually 8mm, not 5. This translates into a stronger cable, but slightly less flexibility and more weight. The device works by two opposing jaws clamping down on the vinyl coating of the cable when locked. The vice grips are about 3/4" long each, so they provide more friction than any person could feasibly remove without tools. It also coils up nicely, and comes with a velcro strap to bundle it up for storage. My only concern is the very small key pattern, which can probably be picked without too much trouble.
