As of the date of this review, this lock is being sold on Amazon for $45. Masterlock sells it for $25.99 (thanks to a review reader update, now $16!) on their official website, with free shipping. I did alert Amazon to this price difference, but if they don't change it, then remember to shop around.
As for the downsides of the lock, it is battery operated, and although they say on the website that the battery should last 5 years, I don't believe that. I already had one fail on me right out of the box, because it was shipped with battery installed and either it was sitting around for 5 years on the shelf (unlikely), or it wont ever last that long. The neat and intuitive part though, is that since the battery can NOT be removed or replaced when the lock is in the locked position (which prohibits theft of the battery while locked)... instead, if the battery dies while locked, the battery door can be opened slightly and a new battery can be inserted into a "jumper" slot to open the lock, and then gives the ability to change the battery completely. This is a very nice feature and shows that Masterlock really thought things through.
Also note that this is an INDOOR lock only...Read more ›
And it would be nice if it was eventually engineered to be weather resistant so it could be used outdoors.
So I kept the lock because it is so cool, but it just sits on a shelf in my closet since I can't use it outside and I have no other use for it.
If you want to use it on one of these lockers...don't get it. [...]
I replaced the battery following logical (and after checking correct) protocols, but the lock is now just dead. Doesn't light or lock. I replaced the replacement battery (another CR2032) and still the lock is dead. After more than a few hours, I've now just accepted that life is just not returning to this lock. Of course, it's not the end of the world, but I AM REALLY DISAPPOINTED. I must assume that due to a lack of mechanical engineering safeguards the battery's not getting current to the lock's power plant. I might be the exception, but in my case; one of my two locks failed.
After seeing this lock and the prices that Amazon were offering it for, I decided to visit the Master Lock online store and lo' and behold, I found the lock, and all for the very reasonable price of $15 (Home Depot and Lowe's also had it for the same price). Do not spend $40 for this lock when the company itself is selling it for much less.
The lock is well built and looks futuristic I guess. But the left and right button sticks a little, it should be fine after breaking in it. but as of now, left and right is not very tactile which often leads to having to do it again. You can set up to 4 unlock codes which I think is dumb because it just makes it easier to "crack" I think it would've been a goo option to make temporary codes that only work for a certain length of time.
This lock's power comes from a coin battery and cannot be removed without first unlocking the lock so you don't have to worry about someone taking your battery and leaving your stuff locked. In case the battery is drained and you are unable to change it since there's no power to unlock it, you CAN still open it by putting a new battery into a tiny indentation that will open the battery compartment (so the battery is never truly secure)
The shackle is a little on the long side, so lockers that have the indented area where the latch and lock goes will not fit this lock well. This lock is rated for indoor use only since it's electronic. I like this for the cool factor, but find more use with their Speed Dial lock were it's mechanical

I have now had two of these just break. No abuse, just normal use. When they break, you can just pull them open and the pull will not catch.Published 9 months ago by Joshua M. Levine
The item worked as promised. But I do not find the use of the USB thumbdrive included. It should be removed to drive the cost down. Read morePublished 17 months ago by Chan Kok Chie
