This review is from: Master Of Orion 2 - Battle at Antares (CD-ROM)
Produced in 1996, this game runs both in Windows 95 and DOS.
Here it is 13 years later, and I still come back over and over to this game as one of my favorites. In fact, I keep an old Windows 98 laptop just so I can avoid difficulties in playing this game on new computers. The basic plot is you are a ruler of a space faring empire. But you are not alone. The galaxy is populated by other space faring races of roughly similar technology levels. You start at a primitive level of technology and through the course of the game, must explore the galaxy, build your civilizations, build a war fleet, and deal or battle with alien races. To make matters worse, this pesky advanced race known as the Ataran's pop up from time to time and cause havoc. The game is very customizable as to the galaxy you set up, your race, fleets and battles, etc. You can dive in and control things in detail every turn, or you can automate some features to concentrate on the core of running your empire. It is very similar to Master of Orion 1, but it has been expanded to add a lot of options. And yes, you still have to deal with that highly advanced lone battleship in the Orion system. Being released in 1996, the graphics still hold up well. I highly recommend this game as one of the best turn based science fiction empire building games ever made.

I've been playing MoO2 ever since it came out, must've been about 15 years ago. Oh, I don't play it as much as I used to but, I still want a copy on hand just in case.
MoO2 is an engaging space romp, a Civ-style game based on exploration, technology, war, diplomacy, and resource management. Pick one of the default species or create your own. Research tech to suit your interests in offense, defence, and culture. Sweet-talk the others or slaughter them all-- play with a friend and/or against the computer. The GUI is spot-on brilliant, it always has what you want at your fingertips. Warning, it can be tricky to get the Windows version to run on some newer versions of Windows. However, it also includes the DOS version (!) which works well under DosBox or DosEmu, on Windows or Linux.

This is a great game, it has a good interface and tons of replay value(I still pop it in from time to time). The 3rd game isn't very good but this one is. If you like Strategy/Sci-fi and/or don't have as much memory or resources to devote to gaming - GET THIS GAME.
