This book was a great resource on many levels. First, as far as the test preparation goes I really liked the diagnostic test. It helped my daughter prioritize her study schedule and create a plan. The subject reviews were still written and easy to understand, but the section that she found most helpful was the comprehensive writing sample review. There was also content provided to me as a parent. The entire Parent's Guide to Private Schools provided me with the different school options to consider and this for finding and paying for the right private school for my daughter.

This book is my personal FAVORITE for ssat prep.

Great workbook with Plenty of exercises.

-It has ample amount of exercises, esp for reading comp & Analogies.

-level of words on analogy&synonym section is similar to the actual test

-The tests are actually slightly more difficult than the actual tests.(better than taking an easy diagnostic test)

-Comprehensive Coverage of the TEST.

Its not for everyone. Just for those who are in need of 97% and higher.

I made sure my students know all the words in analogy, sentence completion and synonym section.

Average SSAT score for students were 98%. Thank you Peterson! (:

I personally favor Peterson,Kaplan and Vocabulary Workshop for SSAT UPPER LEVEL TEST PREP

but I also use McGraw, Princeton, SSAT (from ssat.org) and Older version of Barron's 2001,

(yes i know about the mistakes, yet it still has great

math word problem exercises and I want to make sure

my students get enough practice questions before the test).

I just received this book, after paying extra for overnight delivery, only to find that it only covers the UPPER LEVEL SSAT. I was looking for a lower level review. Unless I missed it, I did not see this differentiation mentioned anywhere in the product description. Now I have to deal with the hassle of returning it and ordering a different resource, which I was hoping to have before going out of town tomorrow. Very frustrating.

First off, there is no vocabulary section. Because 1/4 of the test is almost pure vocabulary, this is a clear deficiency. But, even more importantly, many of the questions were subpar, particularly in the verbal portion -- some of the analogies were simply incorrect or at least highly subjective (I know, you might be thinking I just couldn't do them, but I tutor for the SSAT and have no difficulty acing the verbal sections from the official practice tests). The math section of this book was ok. Overall, I think money is better spent elsewhere. Definitely purchase the official test prep guide after registering for the SSAT and a supplementary book to help with any concepts that a student doesn't understand and to provide them with a list of vocabulary words to learn (the Barron's SSAT book was pretty good and included the latter).

When it came to the actual practice tests, the Peterson's came closest to the actual exam. The difficulty level of the questions was more on par to the actual test than other practice books we tried. However, the essay prompts were not at all like the real test - in the real exam, you have a choice between two. This book only offered one, which might be just fine for some students, but I felt having to sit there and make a choice between two prompts is worth practicing in "real time," as sometimes that might be anxiety-inducing in the middle of the actual test. Overall, I really liked it and found it extremely helpful. But I recommend parents buy more than one book instead of relying on just one, since no one book is perfect. We also bought the Barron's and an online test prep course. The Peterson's practice tests, outside of the essay portion, was more like the real thing in difficulty level, but the other two test prep books helped fill in the gaps that I felt were missing from the Peterson's. Overall a good book, but VERY difficult and can feel discouraging (my son did better on the actual test than he had done in the Peterson's practice exams).

When I ordered this book, I expected to wait at least 2 weeks to get it. However, I received the book in only 5 days. I am pleasantly surprised at how fast the seller shipped it to me.
The tests and preparations in the book were harder than the actual test, so it gave my daughter solid footing in taking the test. The book has many practice problems and have thorough explanations for almost all of them.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who needs to prepare for the SSAT.

We utilized a number of the different preparation guides -- this is by far the best. The practice tests are harder and so are the preparation exercises. Our child found this to be a much better reflection of the actual difficulty of the SSAT test.
