Mary Kelly knows Leadership and apparently so does her dog! What a perfect way to convey how we should be inspired leaders. I particularly appreciated "Why consistently must prevail" how being a consistent leader fosters a mutual respect with employees. Master Your World is a wonderful read with important points that anyone can pick up and have a better understanding of what it takes to become an inspired leader. The fact that she was a Commander in the Navy coupled with being a Navel Academy graduate only reinforces her credibility as a true leader. In the end...I strongly recommend this book.

Dr. Kelly has expertly distilled the criteria and methods for effective leadership in a whimsical analogy to man's best friend. I laughed and learned at the same time. Mary astutely notices the factors that motivate both dogs and people, and then develops methods to motivate peak performance in all. I can only hope that there will be a sequel that provides analysis of and methods for non-dog personalities, like the cat.

Master Your World is a concise, engaging book on business management, people management, and, not incidentally, dog management, although it is far more complicated and serious than one might think, considering the title. Master Your World is a book I looked forward to reading as soon as I saw the title. Funny, serious, and provocative, this is a must read for every manager and leader who has anyone working for them, whether it is one part-time assistant or a company of 10,000.
Part of Mary Kelly's brilliance is in the presentation and the style. Mary lures you into reading the book, and it is only after you finish it that you suddenly find yourself using the techniques she described, and you are suddenly a better leader. I watch this happen with one of the CEOs I coach - in a day, he was better with his people. I went to Mary's website [...] and also got the accompanying workbook - also brilliant.

I bought this book purely because of Dr Kelly's reputation and very much in spite of the title. This is because I am a hard core member of the the Provisional Wing of the Cat Person's Army.

I am therefore amazed and delighted to have been won over by the distinctive Kelly Brand of canine-inspired command skills.

The real secret of this book's success is that it is elegantly simple without ever being simplistic. Kelly manages to boil down her massive experience into a series of practical techniques that are both accessible and compelling, even in the highest-pressure situations. She has given us a privileged snapshot of methods that were clearly honed while carrying out senior leadership roles in the equally hazardous worlds of academia and the US Navy.

To all of you Dog Lovers: read it and purr.

There is a lot to like about this book. Dr. Kelly infuses humor and insight into teaching simple lessons for aspiring leaders. She provides poignant vignettes, checklists for success, thoughts to chew on, and my personal favorite: liberal stories from her considerable leadership experience. (My favorite story was Her Majesty at the Post Office.)

Master Your World is a quick read, but there is plenty of substance. For instance, in Lesson 3, Dr. Kelly describes three lessons that puppies learn by the time they are 8 weeks old. She then relates the lessons from the litter to the workplace: respect the boss, adapt around others, and actions have consequences. She turns these lessons into leadership lessons by showing how leaders commonly undermine their own leadership through inconsistent behaviors.

Very enjoyable reading that any dog-owner can relate to! More importantly, these lessons apply not just to leaders, but in dealing with others in everyday life. Although I am no longer in a management position, I believe that these lessons will help me in dealing with clients in my day job, and other volunteers in my committee roles. Mary's approach is very practical and hands-on which appeals to me much more than the typical leadership philosophy books out there. I sat down and wrote a "thank you" note the same day I finished the book! Thank you, Mary, for giving us these terrific life lessons.

Dr. Kelly has a hit on her hands with Master Your World. Despite not being a dog lover or owner (I'm a cat person), her uncommon approach in writing this leadership book was a superb idea. It did not quite make me want to go out and get my own dog, but it did inspire me to lead people, which is something I've been doing for the past 28 years. As a retired military officer, a leader in business, and now as a government employee working for the military, these lessons were spot on in all respects. Most of her lessons seem like just plain common sense, however, they all have reaffirmed to me that there are no more important people than the people that work for you. Based on what I have read, I would have been honored to work for Dr. Kelly while in the military or in business. She obviously knows how to take care of her people. I've read many leadership books by the "experts." Many of them were good; many the same. Master Your World is different (in a great way). Dr. Kelly is becoming an expert in the leadership world and I cannot wait for the next book!! Thank you for teaching this old dog a new trick or two.
