1.0 out of 5 stars Masterbeat Winter Party 2006- Don't Bother, June 19, 2006
This review is from: Masterbeat - Winter Party 2006 (Audio CD)
Take a pass on this album, absolutely no energy at all, nothing memorable about it. This should never have been released by Masterbeat, commercialism has replaced all artistry here.

2.0 out of 5 stars A mix that's caught in the 90s/70s..., April 4, 2006
This review is from: Masterbeat - Winter Party 2006 (Audio CD)
With all the new dance sounds going around these days, this collection is surprisingly disco influenced. Didn't the 70s die with the 90s? It's now all about the 80s...but not here. We start with a remix of Sylvester by big 90s remixer David Morales, who just can't get with the groove these days...it barely even sounds like he remixed this version. Let's Get Together is a male vocalist and has a funky disco filter feel. There are TWO covers of Donna Summer by Mitch Stevens, Spring Affair, a boring disco house mix, and Lucky, which was one of Donna's best songs ever that never became a single, and which gets a worthy synth-driven cover. Watch This is female vocal and a thumpin female vocal track. Chris Cox puts the hard into the house with the peak hour anthem Glory of Life, one of the best tracks on here-and hard to find otherwise. Then-NO! Not ANOTHER cover of Let the Sunshine In! Blech. Surrender is light, funky vocal house, Love Fool is more of the same (and NOT a cover of the Cardigans), Don't Give Me Your Life is even more of the same, and We All Need Somebody is...yep. More of the same. Very uplifting stuff, but not particularly cutting edge. Definitely a good collection for a "fun" party, and has some long mixes for collectors, but it feels somewhat dated overall. Track times:

1. you make me feel mighty real...sylvester (8:32)
2. let's get together...Antoine clamaran (5:58)
3. spring affair...mitch stevens (6:42)
4. watch this...stazia (6:13)
5. glory of life...mink (7:39)
6. let the sunshine in...49ers (5:26)
7. lucky...D-Bop with Mitch Stevens (7:52)
8. surrender...club junkies (7:05)
9. love fool...le roux (6:36)
10. don't give me your life...cresbo (4:38)
11. we all need somebody...peachy project (6:34)

5.0 out of 5 stars Phil B's Traditional High Energy Uplifting Style on CD for your convenience, May 23, 2006
By
Shannon Murray (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Masterbeat - Winter Party 2006 (Audio CD)
Any experienced clubber knows that frequently the best part of any major circuit party weekend is the Sunday T-dance. And further that Phil B is the king of the t-dance. Phil B transcends the usual t-dance re-telling of the disco era and blends current hits into classics in a way that makes you simply forget about time. T-dances have become such a major part of the circuit movement that promoters have made them more and more elaborate. Prices have raised along with expectations. Thankfully Phil B always delivers and his most recent album is no different. Phil's Winter Party set reflects the music you would expect an audience of 5,000 shirtless boys basking in the sun at a multi-day production to want. My own favorites on this album include "Let's Get Together, which reminds me of Barry White, Glory of Life, which, well imagine yourself standing there wearing nothing but shorts and rainbow flops, and Surrender. I would call Surrender the definition of the Phil B sound in San Francisco. A high energy vocal that has a chorus that reminds you who's boss, "Surrender to my groove", I surrender Phil. Anything must end, even the good things and I'd say "We all need somebody" is exactly what you'd expect from a Phil B ending. Promise. Check it. You'll be humming this song next week. I hope you enjoy Phil as much as we do in San Francisco and get the chance too see him live yourself some day.
