Book Description

June 5, 1998
Facilitators must be masters at helping groups and organizations reach their goals. Whether it's helping an executive team complete a strategic plan, guiding a group through a team-building exercise, or assisting individuals to resolve conflicts, facilitation is a skill that is becoming more and more important.

Using three key concepts in this book, managers and anyone interested in the fine "art" of facilitation will be able to help a group articulate their purpose and determine their true desired results. Then they will be able to choose the level of intervention which will be the most powerful and efficient for that particular group, ultimately becoming "master" facilitators adept at:
-- achieving maximum results.
-- removing barriers to performance and leaving people and organizations more knowledgeable and skilled than before.
-- engineering change efforts that are effective and empowering.

5.0 out of 5 stars concise, easy to follow, powerful tool for managers, August 10, 1999

This review is from: Masterful Facilitation: Becoming a Catalyst for Meaningful Change (Hardcover)
This book is a must read for human resource people on up the CEO's. It is easy to follow and has many concrete examples to how to affect self discipline and followship. It is a more simplified book than the "Fifth Discilpine Fieldguide" by Senge but has the same impact.

3.0 out of 5 stars Remove the words "Masterful Facilitator" from a page or two, March 17, 2000
This review is from: Masterful Facilitation: Becoming a Catalyst for Meaningful Change (Hardcover)
Good book - I have gained a lot from this book but it is not an easy read. Take that beat-to-death-ugly phrase, "Masterful Facilitator", out of a few pages, please. Sounds like we're reading about the "Terminator". Good lessons we can all learn concerning change in the workplace - good reality check when dealing with inevitable changes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Standing the Test of Time, December 3, 2007
This review is from: Masterful Facilitation: Becoming a Catalyst for Meaningful Change (Hardcover)
A nearly 10 year old book that is completely up-to-date on the skills and knowledge required to deliver meaningful facilitation. Defining Masterful Facilitation as, "a purposeful, systematic intervention into the actions of an individual or group that results in an enhanced, ongoing capability to meet desired objectives", the author identifies the three keys to great facilitation - Purpose, Result, Level of intervention; before discussing the personal and professional skills and knowledge required for such facilitation. Then the author takes the reader on a chapter by chapter walk thru the five phases of complete facilitation:

Phase 1: Making Initial Contact - building rapport and getting ready
Phase 2: Clarifying Desired Objectives and Contracting for Results
Phase 3: Designing the Intervention - predesign analysis, design, and agreement
Phase 4: Facilitating - from setup to closure
Phase 5: Evaluating the Results - measurement, evaluation, and revision

Because it is written from the author's practical experience perspective, most anyone with facilitation familiarity should be able to relate to and understand the skills, their applications, and how the phased approach builds on itself to ensure successful outcomes. The book is easy to read, and uses enough stories to hold a reader's interest. It is highly recommended for both users and purveyors of facilitation.
