Book Description

0764195824 978-0764195822 April 1, 2009 Pap/Com
This combination book and audio instructional program is designed to diminish the accents of men and women who speak English as their second language. It will help them speak standard American English with clarity, confidence, and accuracy. Specific exercises concentrate on vowel sounds, problematic consonants such as V, W, B, TH, and the American R, employ correct syllable stress, link words for smoother speech flow, use common word contractions such as won't instead of will not, and more. Additional topics that often confuse ESL students are also discussed and explained. They include distinguishing between casual and formal speech, homophones (for instance, they're and there), recognizing words with silent letters (comb, receipt, and others), and avoiding embarrassing pronunciation mistakes, such as mixing up party and potty. Students are familiarized with many irregular English spelling rules and exceptions, and are shown how such irregularities can contribute to pronunciation errors. A native language guide references problematic accent issues of 13 different language backgrounds. Correct lip and tongue positions for all sounds are discussed in detail. Enclosed with the book are four compact discs that use male and female voices to coach correct American-style pronunciation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Reduce Your Accent, March 30, 2009
By
This review is from: Mastering the American Accent with Audio CDs (Paperback)
For the past few years, I've been searching and trying different books on how to speak standard American English to reduce my accent and ultimately increase my confidence at work and in life, but I've never found one book that really addresses my issues until I used this book.

Reading the book and listening to the CD make me feel that the author truly understands my issues and frustrations. The book demonstrates each pronunciation with practice words and sentences which are simple and easily understood. Those practice words and sentences showed me that I have been pronouncing words incorrectly but wouldn't have known this otherwise. Moreover, I can apply those examples immediately in my daily conversations.

The other merit of this book that I really like is that this book goes beyond the pronunciation. It also teaches you the rules of which word and syllable need to be stressed and which are not. I've been applying these rules. I feel that those rules have helped my intonation when I speak. I learned a lot about how Americans link words together. I use to pronounce thing word by word. This made my speech sound artificial. I love the exercises on linking. You cannot sound like a native speaker is you don't link words.

I also like the section of Native Language Guide section which lists common issues of different languages. I didn't know why Chinese accent is different from Russian's accent. It makes me feel that this book is customized to my needs.

I highly recommend this book. You will benefit it tremendously by following the book's instructions and applying to your daily life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Use together with Lose Your Accent in 28 Days for more impact, August 5, 2009
This review is from: Mastering the American Accent with Audio CDs (Paperback)
Audio is helpful and this book provides it. However, being able to see on video how the sounds are actually made is also very helpful, which is why I also suggest Lose Your Accent in 28 Days. That has a CD-rom with video clips on it that show how to form your mouth to make vowel and consonant sounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very easy to follow, April 4, 2009
This review is from: Mastering the American Accent with Audio CDs (Paperback)
This is the 3rd similar book I have bought in the past few years and this one hands down is the most useful for me because of how easy it is to follow. I have been an American English speaker for the past 15 years and am always looking for ways to sound more "American" and I am amazed at how much I have learned just by reading a few chapters. There are things that I haven't seen any other similar books mention like "Linking words in American". I highly recommend this book for beginners and advanced speakers just trying to perfect their American accent
