Dr. Price goes to great lengths to fully explain the technical functions of ARCGIS in a way that takes the beginner and intermediate user through the steps with ease. Videos show exactly what to do and explain it while doing it. Finish the book and have the confidence to take your data (or find it online) and put together amazing maps for profits, projects, or personal passions. All important topics are covered well, and review questions challenge the reader to expand their own skill at applying the concepts. Truly belongs in every GIS user's library and classroom.

While searching for the newest version of Mastering ArcGIS I had entered in the search field, "Mastering ArcGIS 5th edition". Up popped the book cover I wanted and a list of prices from hardcover at a higher price to Spiral cover at a slightly lower price. Not being picky and selecting the spiral version which was listed with the 5th edition books I processed my order. A few days later I recieved the book for my class and popped the CD-rom into my computer to begin a GIS project for my class. After a frustrating two hours of installation errors I reliezed I had ordered the 4th edition from the sourced 5th edition search page. Well, the 4th edition doesn't work with ArcGIS 10.0 . Frustration and fault lies with Amazon for falsly listing the 4th edition Spiral edition with the pricing edition for the 5th edition as I searched for and originally intended. There goes my money. BE CAREFUL OF AMAZON LISTINGS IN BOOK EDITIONS!!!

this is a good book especially if you need to know how to properly use ArcInfo. the exercises and the walk through are perfect for exploring all of GIS potential and is just a great tool to keep around just in case you forget something.

Although I'm not the biggest fan of the latest version of ArcGIS, this book does pretty well when it comes to navigating it. The chapters are easy to decipher, and the walk-throughs are great. It does miss some bugs, but all in all it's a great book to start with and has awesome tutorials/reference material in the back.

I've found this to be an extremely helpful resource. It was a required text for an intro undergraduate level GIS course. It is still the best text I have used when it comes to actually using ArcGIS.

The chapters are easy to read, tutorials are enjoyable to follow, and the questions throughout the manual test important aspects of each lesson. I would recommend this manual to anyone learning Arc products and as a resource to hold on to once completed. I know I will not be selling this manual back. I will be keeping it as a reference in the event I need to brush up on a topic. Great manual!

The book is both informative on the concepts and principles behind GIS and helpful in training the reader in using ArcGIS. The step by step instructions for the ArcGIS excercises are easy to follow. I'm only on the second chapter, but so far so good. The only thing is that there were a couple review questions asked at the end of the chapter that gave the entire class trouble because they seemed impossible to answer without forknowledge of ArcGIS (specifically, where to look or rather what to look at for the answer)which we didn't have. Asking your professor helps, but if you're doing the problems at home and can't reach him before the questions are due, you are out of luck. Over all though, a good book and a good buy.

I am very excited to be learning GIS, and I understand that the CD is a great resource... That being said, the woman's voice on the CD sounds like nails on a chalk board. It's difficult to concentrate on what she's demonstrating as the voice literally hurts my ears. I assume this is Meribeth Price's voice, perhaps to save on hiring a voice over? It may be very nice in person, but that is not what's captured on the disc. Or perhaps no one will tell her in person that this sounds awful? It seems rather unprofessional of McGraw-Hill...

Came in great condition - cannot wait to use it for my GIS class. I feel that the notebook style book is very convenient.

This book followed the same line as the last ArcGIS book. This is what I liked about it. I wish that it would have pointed out what the changes were in the new ArcGIS 10. I still like the excerises that it has to offer.
