Better than the others - for me,

This review is from: Mastering AutoCAD 2010 and AutoCAD LT 2010 (Paperback)
For years I have used Generic cadd, now known as Visual cadd. I am learning LT 2010 and purchased Ellen Finkelstein's "Bible". That was a good book, but Omura's book is better for me. Here's why - the examples are consistent in that they give the user all the steps, and especially the shortcuts for all the examples. The multiple ways to access a command are also covered consistently. With the "Bible", I found myself trying to figure out the shortcuts. Ellen teaches them to you somewhere in the text, but if you haven't read the whole book, you will have missed some things. I think George also has better tutorials - more concise and easier to follow.
The paper used for Mr. Omura's book is a step away from newsprint, but still acceptable. The "Bible's" layout and printing is very difficult to read. It almost looks like the printer saved on ink. I compared the 2009 "Bible" with this years version, and the 2009 was very readable. I also purchased AutoCAD 2010 Tutorial - First Level: 2D Fundamentals by Randy Shih. That one didn't do anything for me and I sent it back.

This book is very useful to the beginner in autocad and as you become more advance this book will
become more and more useful, So the more advance you become the more useful the book becomes. The book is well organized, easy to follow and understand. You will get very comprehensive guide with the exercises available to each chapter. I can say this book possibly is the best teacher I will ever have.

There are a number of books on the market surveying AutoCad, but this is one of the best - a virtual 'bible' of detail packing in tips on using everything from hatches and tables to linking drawings to databases, presenting 3D models with x-ray views, importing PDF documents as drawings, and much more. Newcomers will find the tutorials build skills while advanced users will appreciate the detailed surveys of the latest features of the program. An accompanying DVD packs in further project details and includes a trial version of AutoCad 2010 and a searchable PDF of the book.

Not for someone totally new to AutoCAD,
This review is from: Mastering AutoCAD 2010 and AutoCAD LT 2010 (Paperback)
I agree with the reviewer who gave it 2 stars. I originally learned AutoCAD 2008 and bought this book as a refresher and to figure out the new 2010 settings. I would NOT recommend this book for a beginner because the mistakes in this book are confusing enough for me when I already know the basics. There aren't mistakes on every page but enough to be frustrating and momentarily confusing. That's when the F1 key (AutoCAD 2010 Help box) comes in handy. If you already know AutoCAD and just want to figure out the 2010 features and where everything is, this book is written in a good format and will fit your needs.

If you are brand new to AutoCAD, this book may be a bit difficult to understand. The author describes some of the more complicated commands before you really get a grasp of the program. If you have used AutoCAD before, this is an excellent reference with a lot of great information. The book does come with a 30 day trial version of AutoCAD 2010. I'm not saying don't buy the book if your new, it might just take a little while to grasp some of the concepts. I bought the book, since AutoCAD started using the ribbon. So far, I am very happy.

This is a clear & comprehensive reference for AutoCAD 2010. I found it easy to read and follow. Recently it was very helpful when I needed guidance for program customization. Highly recommended as an excellent reference - beginners might be better off with a another more simple tutorial such as AutoCAD 2010 for Dummies.

So far, it's the best software how-to book I've used,

I got my copy of Mastering AutoCAD 2010 and AutoCAD LT 2010 just a couple days ago, and am currently making my way through the first chapter, but I have to say I'm very impressed with the book so far.
What makes this book so special? The author seems to have a very good understanding of how people learn, and assumes absolutely NO prior knowledge to AC, walking the reader through the paces step by logical step. So far, the screen shots in the book replicate exactly what I see on screen, and all of the instructions make sense and are easy to follow. One of the things I especially appreciate--and what I have never seen in any other software how-to book--is that the author is really able to put aside his own extensive knowledge and expertise and to understand things from an absolute beginner's standpoint. This goes as far as explaining how he will refer to various tools, commands, etc., as it is not at all self-evident (i.e. when one refers to the "circle" tool do they mean the circle tool in general, or the Center, Radius tool specifically, or???) I also like the way that he will refer to something and acknowledge that the topic has yet to be covered and also indicate when it will be, i.e. at one point after briefly touching on the Command Window, he writes: "I'll elaborate on the Command window in the section, 'Working in the Command Window' later in this chapter." This is helpful. I've used plenty of manuals that don't have this kind of "memory" for what they've told you and what they haven't, quite as if the author suffers from Alzheimer's and keeps re-introducing the same concepts while completely skipping over the introductions of others. The book comes with handy reference material such as the "When Things Go Wrong" section in one Appendix. Other Appendices include "The Bottom Line," which is a quick review for each chapter and "Installing and Setting Up AutoCAD". I look forward to "mastering" AutoCAD with this book and anticipate it will be a useful resource in the years to come.

I hate buying computer books because using them is cumbersome and painful to me - it's really counter-productive to have to flip through a giant book while operating the key board and mouse in the same time plus it terribly strains my eyes and neck. With this book, it's no longer a problem for me because it comes with a PDF version of the book that I can view on the same monitor.
And the author's approach of teaching is refreshingly skillful. Like a mother bird, he has the ability to break things down and feed them to you piece by piece so that you don't feel overwhelmed at any giving time. I've been using this book for the past several weeks and for the first time ever, I have not been distracted by any confusions that would drive me off the wall or stall my progress. It might be a little too early to say but I feel confident that I am well on my way to master AutoCAD2010! Kudos to the author whose book is my new bible!

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC BOOK, FIRST TIME USERS OF AUTOCAD SHOULD HAVE THE BOOK AS A BIBLE TO EXPLORE AND SELF-EDUCATE THEMSELVES. PURCHASE OF THE BOOK IS ONE OF THE BEST AND THE MOST IMPORTANT STEPS TO START THE JOURNEY WITH AUTOCAD'S AMAZING AND SPECTACULAR POSIBILITIES. HAVE FUN!!!
