About the Author

Paul F. Aubin is the author of Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop R3 published by Autodesk Press. Paul has a background in the architectural profession spanning over fifteen years. Paul is currently The Autodesk Training Center Manager and National ADT Applications Engineer for Consulting for Architects, Inc. (CFA) and he serves as the Moderator for CADence magazine’s online CAD questions forum. He was among the speakers at Autodesk University 2000 and 2001 and the recipient of the Autodesk Central Region 2001 Architectural Award of Excellence. Paul has been a guest speaker at Chicago area events for The American Institute of Architects Northeast Illinois and The Association of Licensed Architects. Throughout his five years with CFA, Paul has successfully trained over 1100 professionals in Architectural Desktop, AutoCAD and 3D Studio VIZ. Prior to joining CFA, Paul served as CAD Manager with an Interior Design and Architecture firm in downtown Chicago and amassed many years of hands-on project architect level experience. The combination of his experiences in architectural practice, as a CAD Manager and an Instructor give his writing and his classroom instruction a fresh and credible focus. Paul is an Autodesk Certified Instructor (ACI) and an associate member of the American Institute of Architects. He received his Bachelor of Science in Architecture and his Bachelor of Architecture from The Catholic University of America. Paul lives in Chicago with his wife Martha their son Marcus and twins Justin and Sarah.

Paul F. Aubin is the author of many CAD and BIM titles including the widely acclaimed: Mastering AutoCAD Architecture and Paul F. Aubin's Mastering Revit Architecture. Paul is an independent architectural consultant who travels the country lecturing and providing Revit® Architecture and AutoCAD® Architecture implementation, training, and support services. Paul's involvement in the architectural profession spans nearly 20 years, with experience that includes design, production, CAD management, mentoring, coaching, and training. He currently serves as Moderator for Cadalyst magazine's online CAD Questions forum, is an active member of the Autodesk user community, and has been a top-rated speaker at Autodesk University (Autodesk's annual user convention) for many years. His diverse experience in architectural firms, as a CAD manager, and as an educator gives his writing and his classroom instruction a fresh and credible focus. Architectural Desktop is conceptually easy to understand, but expert guidence is required in order to use all it's features to produce "real" work, . This is a book written by an Architect who intimately knows ADT and also knows how Architects work. The book is very well written, it is clear and useful in its presentation. I wasn't getting very far with ADT until I read this book, (and I've read other ADT books). I highly recommend it.

Keeping up with technology is getting harder every year, almost every day. This book has made it easier for me and my company. As a CAD company, we need to stay on top of it. Mr. Aubin's book has been a great aid in that. You really need to go through the first section, but then you can go to the part of the book that deals with what you are working on in your project. The exercises that are in the book are easy to understand and thorough in their coverage of the topic. The drawings that come with the book are excellent. And the exercises deal with both residential and commercial projects with drawings for each type. One of the great pluses of these drawings are that you do not have to keep building from the first one to the last. Each section has an updated drawing for you to use so that you can concentrate on the topic that you are working on. There is also a completed drawing for you to reference and see the finished result. I created a seperate sub-directory for my exercises. This way, I can keep the original drawings intact and use them again, in case I need to start over or want to try again. I also open both the exercise drawing for the topic that I am working on as well as the project that I am working on at the time. This has been a great help in getting my drawings to be correct and so that I get the finished project done correctly.

If you have no other reference book on ADT R3 or R3.3, get this one. You will have it broke in and dog-eared in no time at all. I made sure that everyone in my firm has one, as well as the architects that I work with.

Great book essential for getting started! (The autodesk book "Gettign Started" certainly doesn't. Nor does the online training included with ADT.) Very thoughtfully laid out and really gets you into the "guts" of the product in short order. CD included has a great setup for doing residential and commercial work...you can use it to set up your shop. Any corrections or clarifications in the book or on the CD are on paulaubin.com. As software is a work in progress, so are these books on the software, and the site includes some important clarifications that have come out since the release of 3.3. If you need to know ADT, buy this book.
