Inaccurate Code, Mistakes, Typos, oh my! DON'T BUY if you want to learn to code correctly!,

This review is from: Mastering CSS & HTML Training Tutorial (CD-ROM)
I'd rather give good reviews, but this is SO bad that I don't want to see anyone waste their money on this tool, trying to learn HTML or CSS. My appologies to the person trying to to sell this CD, but please don't waste your time or money here. I'm just going to either throw my copy in the garbage (wouldn't even give it to Goodwill), or try to get a refund from Frys. Might also make a good coaster? Or flying disc, perhaps?
Seriously, this software appears to have been developed by someone inexperienced, who doesn't know how to write HTML or CSS. The content hasn't been proofed for errors, as it is strewn with mistakes, typos, and inaccuracies. If you follow their instructions, you will be writing sloppy and incorrect code, which will not display correctly in browsers. I am providing feedback as an experienced corporate Web designer for 15 years, who has also designed HTML Help systems and automated training programs for another 8 years. I purchased this CD as it was on sale, to check out the advanced native HTML and CSS as it toted this as a "master" level program. THIS IS NOT AN ADVANCED LESSON, AND I STRONGLY DISCOURAGE ITS USE BY ANYONE INEXPERIENCED WHO WANTS TO LEARN HTML OR CSS!!! I cannot state this strongly enough. Some of the problems include: (1) There are frequent inaccuracies in teaching CSS and HTML, incomplete code samples/instructions, inconsistent/inaccurate assembly of tags and attributes, and more. (EXAMPLE, from Lesson 3 Part 2: They instruct the use of ordered list formatting--roman numerals--for an unordered <UL> list item, when they should ONLY use bullets; They instruct the use of bullet formatting for ordered list <OL> items, when they should ONLY use numbers and letters instead; Then they mix up the descriptions between the sample code and generated page view displayed on the same screen, and explain it inaccurately). (2) There are typographical errors on most screens throughout the CD in both the CODE instructions and samples, and in the basic content and narration. Some of the narration boxes are hidden behind the navigation toolbar for the tutorial, in case you want to read the instructions. (3) Many of the screen captures show sample code and the associated generated browser page for that code, but the code and/or content do not match. They are displayed together on the same screen side-by-side. (4) Here's a sample of mistakes with even the SIMPLEST details. The instructions on how to add comment tags is wrong (should be <!-- -->, but they instruct and display writing it as <-- --> without the exclamation point after the "less-than" symbol). The code for a non-breaking space is incorrect (should include a semicolon at the end, but they instruct and display writing it without the semicolon, which may work--but it's incorrect.) (5) Some screens include a "Next" button to continue; other screens provide no direction in where to click to continue, and the navigation bar doesn't always work, especially if the current screen narration hasn't finished its preset timing. (6) The 'voice' that reads the content is a monotone computer-generated voice-over, which is annoying to listen to after the first few minutes. (7) The content is often written in unclear and poor grammar, with incomplete thoughts that are difficult to follow. If you want to learn HTML and CSS (and you should also learn XHTML at the same time to be current), I highly recommend the O'Rielly Head First Labs series titled HTML with CSS and XHTML. Excellent book, clear and easy to understand. The "For Dummies" book series is also a good one. Good luck to you!! (And again, sorry to the person selling this, I'd try to get rid of it too!)
