This review is from: Mastering the Chopin Etudes and Other Essays (Hardcover)
"The basic rhythm becomes the greatest assistance in establishing this relationship.Think of the juggler as we start the analysis for playing the Etude's:Doing one thing never interferes with the continuity of the complete routine.Every seperate act is inside the rhythm of the over-all pattern. So it is with playing a phrase:Each articulation of tone must be inside the basic rhythm(the routine of the juggler)which is the action that forms the phrase as a whole,or the phrase ceases to be an integrated whole. The later happens when the hand or fingers cease to wait for the upper arm to initiate the going forward."-Abby Whiteside-This paragraph alone was worth the purchase of the book for me.When rhythm is the driving force of playing with much work and patience their is no limit to what one could learn to play on the piano(or any instrument). All that time I wasted banging out Hanon exercises and scales in hope that my fifth finger would soon be able to lift a car.Lol.Piano is not played by the fingers.Piano is played by Rhythm and emotion-the finger's just happen to physically touch the keys.RHYTHM,RHYTHM,RHYTHM!Belive in yourself.
