Book Description

What others have said about Mastering Digital Cameras.

"I like how the author builds quite high expectations in the introduction of the book, and manages to fulfill them fully throughout the book."

"I am amazed at his ability to focus on teaching people, like me, who have done basically nothing with cameras other than point and shoot. There is a wealth of useful and understandable information in this book,..."

"I've been photographing for years since first SLR in 1960s and yet I found much of interest and some I was unfamiliar with. I especially appreciated the clear, concise presentation."

" Even us 'know-it-alls' are surprised by the information that cleared-up some uncertain items that had existed too long."

"As a former photography student who learned almost nothing over a two year period, I can now say that I fully understand the terminology and possess the technical skill to take better photographs and possibly revisit my dream of becoming a sports photographer."

Whether You are New to Photography, making the transition from Film to Digital Photography, or just want to improve your skills, this book will save you TIME and MONEY!

No more intimidation! If you understand how Digital Cameras work, every photo becomes a learning experience.

Many people are walking around with expensive cameras that they barely know how to use and others are missing great photo opportunities because they have been misinformed by well-meaning friends.

This book is based on the premise that a solid understanding of photographic equipment results in a faster learning curve and better photos. The technology is actually quite simple when it is broken down and clearly explained.

Without an understanding of cameras, you are at the mercy of others in all your buying decisions. You will only scratch the surface of your camera's capabilities until you take on its manual settings.

You need to read this book because:

  • It will take the confusion out of Photographic terminology by clearly defining every important term used.
  • Your learning will be enhanced by 120 charts and photos that will simplify discussions and help you to remember what you learned.
  • You will learn why buying a camera based on Megapixels alone is a bad idea.
  • You will learn how sensor size and lens selection affect image quality more than any other factors.
  • Strange photographic terms will loose their mystique once you learn how they were carried over from film photography.

˃˃˃ You will also learn:

How digital images are created and stored.

Which file format to use when editing photos.

Which file format to use when sharing photos.

How to select a lens for your DSLR camera.

How to properly adjust exposure.

Why a zoom lens can be a very good investment.

Why you should care about focal length, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO as well as what these terms mean.

˃˃˃ About the author:

Al Judge is a professional photographer living in Sedona, Arizona. His works are displayed in several locations around town. He is a best selling author with more than a dozen photography books.

This book is the first in a series of Digital Photography 101 books that this author plans to publish and is geared towards beginners in digital photography.

Modern cameras have so many settings and capabilities that can be overwhelming to a beginner. If someone doesn't explain you the basics of it, you will be lost and not use camera's full potential. This book will really help you to get the basics before you start using your camera, especially if you have moved up to the DSLR level where options get much more manual and less automatic.

I like how the author builds quite high expectations in the introduction of the book, and manages to fulfill them fully throughout the book. There is really no prior photography experience needed to absorb the content of this book. The topics discussed are clearly explained and follow nicely one another, increasing your practical knowledge with each chapter.

Another thing that I liked is that the book is very visual. It has a lot of pictures that are a great help in understanding the concepts that are discussed. It actually should be like that for any photography book, but many other books on the market are much more difficult to grasp because of it.

The value this book provides is much much higher than the price paid, so I fully recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book October 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have a BFA in Photography, and have been in a darkroom since I was 8 years old, however, I haven't picked up a camera in many years, and certainly don't claim to be knowledgable on digital photography. I replaced my old manual film Pentax K1000 with a Nikon digital camera and had a very hard time trying to convert my knowledge of film into digital photography. This book was very helpful, very clear and concise. The cut away pictures of the camera are very neat, I don't think I had ever seen those before. This book helped convert my knowledge of film into digital and I feel more comfortable using my digital camera. It gives very clear explanations on metering, focusing, and white balance. I think this book would be great for a beginner or even a person with photography experience but not digital cameras. Great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful and Informative May 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I want to start this review by giving a sincere thank you to the author, Al Judge. As a former photography student who learned almost nothing over a two year period, I can now say that I fully understand the terminology and possess the technical skill to take better photographs and possibly revisit my dream of becoming a sports photographer. Mastering Digital Cameras reads like a textbook only better. It contains all of the information of the best college level textbooks but is actually easy to understand. The only curriculum this book follows is that of a master photographer like Al Judge. And the best part about it is that you don't need to have any previous photography experience to be able to pick up this book and learn how to choose and use a new camera. If you are a seasoned pro, you can still learn a thing or two from this book, but if you are new to photography you will learn more just by reading this book than anyone can ever teach you in a formal class. For someone like me, the abundant illustrations were very helpful. I learn better by doing and aside from having the author right here with me, the book's illustrations are the next best thing. If you are in doubt about this book, just buy it and give it a read. It is well worth the time if you want to build a solid foundation for your photographic skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ebook! Lots of valuable information April 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
It's a fact that photographs and pictures are everywhere nowadays. Almost everyone can easily take photos through his camera or smartphone, but do we all really make the most out of our photos? This eBook will take you by the hand and show you all the things you need to know to improve the quality of the pictures you take and also present you the evolution of cameras. It will also help you choose the right camera and also explain you in simple words what their capabilities and new technologies are. What I liked the most is that the eBook is very visual. After all it's about photographs and there's no way to better describe the subject than showing it. Also, there are really lots of illustrations and charts that will allow you to understand a Digital Camera's insights, what it consists of and how it works. That might sound unnecessary, but believe it helped me a lot with my pics. Especially if you need the photos for you work or even for pleasure, Mastering Digital Cameras will surely boost the way you handle your camera. In general, I would highly recommend this eBook to any reader who wants to get to know cameras and everything around them. Looking forward to the sequels.

. The book does a great job of informing of the basics and the vas t option s available to someone taking photos.

The book does not go into heavy details about subjects that I am not ready for. The author did a great job of maintaining t h e focus of the book and opening the door to working with my camera.

More About the Author

Al Judge is a professional photographer and author living with his wife in Sedona, Arizona. In March 2012, the Sedona Area Guild of Artists (SAGA) included Al in their list of the Best Artists of Sedona 2012.

Al's work is on display at the Pop-Up Gallery at Hillside in Sedona, Arizona.

Al's books use numerous illustrations and clear explanations to take the mystery out of creating excellent images. A few hours spent with one of these books can save the reader from months of frustration and confusion.

Fine-art photography (images suitable for framing and displaying) are the result of an emotional response to something of beauty or interest. This cannot happen if you are stressed out by the technology that you are using to capture those images. Even some of the best books on photography assume that the reader understands a language that is unique to photography. For most of us, this assumption takes the joy out of learning. Al's books never make this assumption. Every term used is clearly defined and explained so that you will never be left scratching your head and wondering what you missed.

Although Al's books are quite comprehensive, they are written in such a way that no prior knowledge of photography is required. We all learn at different speeds and in different ways. For any skill developed, excellence comes with practice. These books will increase the effectiveness of your practice by steering you in the right direction and exposing the error of some common misconceptions. They provide a solid foundation for accelerated learning.

If you would rather be taking pictures than sitting in a classroom, these books are for you. If you have a limited budget, these books are for you. If you don't know enough about photography to ask the right questions, these books are for you. If you want more control over the learning process, these books are for you. Most importantly, if you want to be taking exceptional photographs in record time, these books are for you.

Al believes that we can learn a lot from the masters of any craft. With online training videos we have access to photography masters like never before. Unfortunately, most people don't have the knowledge to fully understand many of these lessons. Al has written books that can get anyone up to speed in just a few hours. His books are never intimidating and are filled with valuable insights, numerous illustrations, and photographic knowledge.

Since retiring from the corporate world, Al has immersed himself into the art of photography with the same passion and enthusiasm that made him a top innovation expert and corporate inventor.

He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and was in charge of New Products Concepts (corporate innovator) for Black & Decker for 23 years prior to his early retirement in 2001.

In 2007, Al published his first book "Innovation's Missing Link" based on his personal experience at Black & Decker as well as his time as a Board Member of PDMA. The essence of the book is human creativity and potential. Al believes that all life experience has a spiritual component and that we are most productive when our values and beliefs are in harmony with our life work. "Innovation's Missing Link" contains several chapters related to socially-conscious business practices.

Al worked at Black &Decker for a total of 37 years in a variety of roles. As a college student, he was privileged to work on the Lunar Surface Drill. This is the drill that was used by the Apollo Astronauts to take core samples of the moon. He is still humbled to think that there is a drill on the surface of the moon that was once in the trunk of his car. Al designed many of the first cordless power tools. The battery technology used in these tools was a by-product of the Space Program. The Nickel-Cadmium batteries used in these tools provided a model for all cordless technology including iPads, iPods, and smart phones.

Since his retirement, Al has finally been able to focus on his lifelong love of photography. Because of his passion for photography and desire to share what he has learned, he published his first eBook -- "Digital Photography Like a Pro!" in October 2012. Since then, Al has published over a dozen more eBooks.
