When I agreed to review this book, I was worried I might be bored with a lot of over my head theories.

This book contains simple, accurate explanations of camera settings and the terms associated with them.

I have always wanted to find out more about what these settings do so that I can make better use of my DSLR. This book does a good job of not only explaining the setting, but explaining the why behind what it does.

The content is great. The Table of Contents is now linked. In a reference, non-fiction book like this, a linked TOC is truly essential.

Nice illustrations were throughout.

I would recommend this book to a new photographer that wants to find out more about how to take advantage of their camera's more advanced settings.

First, this book is intended for people who are new to photography. Anyone who has a DSLR and wants to learn the basics of taking a good picture should read this book. I have owned a DSLR for a while and learned about half of this book by trial and error. If I read this book when I purchased my DSLR, I would be able to take the pictures that I take today much earlier. That is not to say that this book will make you a photographer. You still need to shoot a ton in order to learn and improve the skills that this book teaches you. Once you are comfortable with the skills that the book teaches you, then reading more advanced photography books if you want to further improve your technique would be appropriate. At least, that is what I plan to do.

It is a very easy read and something that you can refer back to anytime. Every lesson is backed by a couple pictures as an example. I wish that there were more pictures of what not to do, just to demonstrate the lessons better.

I would recommend this book to any new DSLR user.

As I get older I am losing patience for overly technical books. Mr. Youn takes the complexities of modern digital photography then presents them in an easy to digest manner. Anyone with the typical abbreviated attention spans will love this writing style!

I'e always been partial to B/W photography, and a few months ago I ventured into the world of IR.
Needless to say, I was thrilled with the chapter about IR photography, and I hope it will help me improve my IR photos.
I work with a Nikon DSLR and IR Hoya filter, since a dedicated IR camera is currently not in my budget.
Either way, the IR chapter was a big help, most photography tutorials barely touch the subject. That alone deserves a solid 5 stars.
Thanks for the free download.

I was given a copy of this book by the author with the agreement to provide an honest review. I found this book immensely helpful and easy to understand. While I have been using a digital camera for many years, I always used the automatic setting. I felt it was about time for me to get more familiar with what my camera could actually do. After all, automatic mode is not successful in all conditions. I wanted to get away from photo-shopping my pictures all the time.

I found the paper version of the book easier to refer back to, as the lighting/exposure/f-stop information is tricky to remember for me. This book has what I need in simple enough terms to be very useful to me. It is perfect for beginners who want to improve their photography skills and to not feel clueless in difficult lighting conditions. It also has chapters with information for non-beginners and tips and tricks that are very helpful to anyone wanting to be a better photographer. I would definitely recommend this book.

Jason Youn had a Winner in his book, The 99 cent Photography Guide, but his latest effort blows it away. It isn't a rehash of old material as it is an excellent expansion and clarification of his previous book. Mr. Youn goes further with in depth explanations of every topic and makes such subjects as Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO, White Light Balance, and all those confusing areas of Photography become very Clear and Understandable. His approach is clear and concise without trying to be confusing to the reader. Although the book contains no pretty colored pictures to thrill your retinas, his illustrations are direct and to the point. I highly recommend this book Beginning Photographers and even more Seasoned Veterans of the Lens, as it is a great book to learn from and a invaluable Reference book for every Photographers library. Buy it, you won't regret it.

I am so glad I found this book. I am just a beginner using my husband's DSLR and my pictures have always just looked like a billion other mediocre photos. I'm ready to move to the next level and I must say that Jason's book was easy to follow and very easy to understand. If you don't first learn the technology behind what's happening, you will never be able to turn out fantastic photographic art.
