Become a World-Class Project Leader and Implement World-Class Project Practices

“Alexander Laufer is one of the world’s wisest authorities on projects and how they work.”
–From the Foreword by Larry Prusak, Founder and Former Executive Director, Institute for Knowledge Management (IKM)

“I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The stories bring home the essence of what good projects need–good leadership. They present real women and men in very difficult situations, who succeed by doing what is right for the project and end up bringing the project team together to believe in the project.”
–Charlene (“Chuck”) Walrad, Managing Director, Davenport Consulting, Inc.; Vice President, Standards Activities, Board of Governors, IEEE Computer Society

“Alexander Laufer and his colleagues have captured the essence of what project managers must do to deliver remarkable results–no matter where they work–by leading, not following, a scripted checklist.”
–W. Scott Cameron, Global Project Management Technology Process Owner, Procter & Gamble Company

Mastering the Leadership Role in Project Management is required reading for project managers who would like insights on how to improve their skills and get better project results.”
–Nadine Chin-Santos, Senior Project Manager, Assistant Vice President, Parsons Brinckerhoff

“Stories help us to learn, and Alexander Laufer’s book contains wonderful stories about leadership by great leaders. If you want to lead projects, as opposed to administer them, then read these fascinating stories.”
–Jim Highsmith, Executive Consultant, ThoughtWorks; Author, Agile Project Management

“In Mastering the Leadership Role in Project Management, Alexander Laufer introduces us to exceptional project leaders, the best of the best, and allows us to observe, in riveting narratives, how they plan, problem solve, and inspire
their teams to deliver remarkable results.”
–Hugh Woodward, Former Chair, Project Management Institute

Through eight remarkable case studies, Mastering the Leadership Role in Project Management presents a start-to-finish framework for managing projects of all sizes–even the largest and most challenging projects. World-renowned expert in project management, Alexander Laufer, demonstrates both how to become a great project leader and how to lead your teams in applying the specific project practices that impact success. Laufer and his extraordinary team of contributors focus on “take-home practices” you can use right away, whether you’re planning a new project or revitalizing a project that’s already in trouble.

You’ll discover better and faster ways to adapt to change, learn how to “give up” control without “losing” control, use face-to-face interaction to maximize alignment, manage “no fun” missions in hostile environments, and learn more from your ongoing experience as a project manager. Perhaps most important of all, this book will help you unlearn widespread project management assumptions that prevent success instead of promoting it.

The world’s best project leaders show how to:
  • Master the power of autonomy and learning
  • Manage creativity through action
  • Soar higher by combining spirit and systems
  • Deliver on bold ideas through meticulous preparation and quick response
  • Accomplish unpleasant tasks by developing a culture of trust and responsibility
  • Successfully execute multiple interrelated projects by leading upward
  • Shape culture by exploiting location
  • Accelerate delivery by “splitting” and “harmonizing“

Dr. Laufer and his colleagues not only understand that project management must evolve to meet today's uncertain environment, but recognize that the key to identifying cutting-edge concepts is to extract and document the tacit knowledge of the best practitioners, and share them as stories. The real-life stories about project managers achieving remarkable results are insightful, instructive, and make for enjoyable reading.

Dr. Laufer and his colleagues produced this excellent guide for practitioners by studying a wide variety of successful project managers affiliated with advanced organizations. By conducting these studies in a systematic and thorough manner, they were able to produce very solid and innovative research.

Unlike many other books on project management, this book can be easily understood and embraced by readers from all walks of life. This splendid book, full of entertaining and useful cases will significantly enhance the ability of all readers, regardless of their background and current occupation, to successfully lead their projects. Whether you lead a small team of nurses or lawyers, or a very large team on a construction site or in the software lab, this book is a must read for you.

As I continue to learn and grow in my function as a project manager, I'm always seeking out new books to try and expand my knoweldge base. Mastering the Leadership Role in Project Management (MtLRiPM) caught my eye because the focus seemed to be clearly on how leadership skills are really one of the focal points in being an effective PM. The 8 examples contained within are exemplars of leadership in the PM role, but sometimes I feel are bit too "big" for some practical application.

This is my first time reading one of Dr. Laufer's works, and at the very least the examples are all very engaging. I think one of the shortcomings for me came from expectations: while I found all of the examples well fleshed out and clearly strong exemplars of extraordinary leadership, they were a bit 'large' for me to find a ton of ready applicability in my day-to-day role as a PM. But that's okay, because they're still oustanding examples and I was able to glean methods from them to apply to my own business.

Overall, a really solid book that I'd encourage anyone in leadership to read, and not just project managers.

I am a loyal reader of Dr. Laufer and have read his previous book as well. I was, therefore, not surprised to read that two prominent leaders of the most advanced project management associations, regard Dr. Laufer at the highest esteem. In a review of his previous book, Dr. Martin Barnes, President of the Association for Project Management (UK) wrote: "Dr Laufer is, in my opinion, one of the few real thinkers in project management development." While Hugh Woodward, former Chair of the Project Management Institute (US) wrote: "Dr Laufer departs from conventional wisdom to provide real solutions for forward-looking organizations in the 21st century."

I find the current book, "Mastering the Leadership Role in Project Management," just as brilliant as his previous book and even more engaging. The book, which is a distillation of the wisdom from the best project leaders in the world, is full of powerful insights and easy to apply practices.

To succeed in today's chaotic world you must read "Mastering the Leadership Role." This book is a masterpiece. It engages your mind and you can easily apply its practices. After reading the nine practices for project leadership you will never return to the conventional and outmoded tools of project management. You will change your mindset and simply think and act differently.

This is an insightful, well-researched and thoughtful book on the leadership role in project management, using a wealth of good examples and real-life situations. The themes and conclusions start to become apparent by the third or fourth PM story, so that even if the examples are not readily comparable to your industry, eventually you can see the applicability of PM lessons in plane manufacturing versus, say, software design. I'd strongly recommend this for anyone who is expected to provide strong leadership in a PM environment - there are some excellent lessons here.

This book started out very strong - the type of book you find yourself highlighting. Terrific figures on how much data is processed in one day as compared to just a few years ago. The impact of old theories that could be holding business back. The need and justification of new methods to replace age old standards. It was making sense. It was exciting. It was just the preview...then the book began in earnest and suddenly, it switches to page after page of transcripts. Quotes of entire conversations. What the heck?!!!! I don't want to read the entire conversation...I just want the facts and nothing but the facts.

Sadly, it didn't change. Page after page of conversation. It was difficult to concentrate - a lot like one of those business dinners where you really just want to get back to the hotel and relax rather than listen to someone drone on endlessly. Yes, it's good information but the format of delivery left a lot to be desired. I only docked it one point because the information is terrific. It's a timely book, it's original in thought, it's much needed...it's just so tedious in the middle.

Then, at the end, it all comes together again and the original voice, data, concise and clear communication starts anew...just in time to pull it together. So, do yourself a favor...read the beginning and read the end then decide what parts of the middle you want to suffer through. I have a sneaky suspicion the author either hired out the middle or got some terrible editorial advice....either way, it did no favors. This would have been an absolutely fantastic book if the clear, concise communication of the beginning and that of the end had been allowed to continue throughout the middle. Instead, page after mind numbing page of conversation made this a chore to read.

It's not without merit but such a shame that a book with this much potential was allowed to be buried in mundane, tedious "fluff".
