Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

As 74-year-old physician Life sees it, there are two options when it comes to aging: “You can choose to grow old and weak, or you can choose to do something about it.” In this follow-up to his popular book, The Life Plan (2012), Life outlines a strategy to pump up metabolism, regain energy, ward off disease, and even quash aging. His plan emphasizes a detailed diet, dedicated exercise program, and some controversial hormone replacement therapy. Five small, low-calorie meals per day with a specific ratio of fat, protein, and carbohydrates are recommended. Sample recipes are provided. Exercise entails resistance training (weight lifting), aerobic (cardio) workouts, and flexibility drills. Many photographs of the muscular MD performing these exercises are included. Life is fond of supplements and nutraceuticals. He decrees that testosterone and human growth hormone treatments are appropriate and safe for many middle-aged and elderly men. He suggests dehydroepiandrosterone and melatonin, too. His plan seems to be working wonders for him, but mainstream medical opinion does not share Life’s exuberance for a helping of hormones. --Tony Miksanek --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Dr. Jeffry Life, a board-certified, family practice physician and now a pioneer in age management medicine, is a recognized leader in the healthy aging field. He has a thriving age management medicine practice located in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dr. Life was 59 years old when he realized he looked and felt like an old man. His cholesterol scores were sky high and he was on his way to becoming a type 2 diabetic. Now, he has turned his quest for health and fitness into a comprehensive method that can be followed with success by men of any age. His first book, THE LIFE PLAN: How Any Man Can Achieve Lasting Health, Great Sex, and a Stronger, Leaner Body, will be published by Simon & Schuster/Atria Books in May 2011.

Dr. Life is an incredible human specimen at 74 years old. Most 25-year-olds WISH they had a body like his. So, upon seeing the cover - an advance copy (I am a bookseller) - I was sucked in: how in the world can a 74-year-old look like that?

Most of 'The Plan' seems very straightforward: diet techniques (low-carb diet basically), exercise routines (many specific exercise techniques to be done on a regular basis), and ... um... taking HGH (human growth hormone) and testosterone on a regular basis. Yes, performance-enhancing drugs.

"No way! Really?", you say? Yes, really. But wait: even though my own reaction was that this was a bit crazy, I was compelled to read on and, in the end, found that it wasn't so crazy after all. Whether or not I would actually DO 'The Plan' is another matter, however. Let's take the easier one first, testosterone: one, it's not a controlled substance, and two, many studies show that it does have excellent benefits, as described by Dr. Life. Now, the difficult one: first, you wouldn't think you could even GET any HGH unless you knew a pro sports trainer with a casual approach to lawbreaking. Wrong: there is an FDA loophole in the law that allows its sale (in a clinical environment) and the largest supplier is a firm called Cenegenics. And guess who owns Cenegenics: Dr. Life.

My impression is that Cenegenics is a legit, cutting-edge company and that its "hormone optimization" program is just one of its many services. But I digress from the book. In the end, I don't think I would embark on the project, as impressive as 'The Plan' has been for Dr. Life himself. I took vitamin E supplements for years, for its well-known health benefits.

The useful information in this book can easily be found on the internet. The workout program is too advanced for beginners. His program would be overwhelming for an untrained person and ultimately lead to failure. I'm a 75 year old bodybuilder in as good or better shape & condition than Dr Life and I would not recommend his workout program. His diet of small high protein meals every three hours is sound information. Although testosterone prescribed and controlled by your physician is good advice the use of HGH can be deleterious. Good information can be found on bodybuilding.com or muculardevelopement.com.

I am about the age when Dr. Life started his transformation journey, and I have found this book just right for me, full of wisdom how to manage my body, beginning from how to understand it and how to deal with it's issues, and not blaming getting old. Mentioning issues, I had a couple demonstrated by very bad autoimmune responses for over a couple years, over the time I have found that strengthening the body by vigorous weight exercises and diet, made the issues to go away!
At some point we may think about hormonal enhancements, however this is up to the individuals, I hope following the book's regime I will be able to maintain my health without them. Though, I have always been wondering what is the difference between HRT for women which has been used for years, and this what Dr. Life is talking about for men?
I am following a routine to attend the gym three times a week, doing weights, I also jog in the other days, and feeling always greater after that. I am battling to get the diet right, but every time I go back to the book, I am back on the right track. Dr Life's book is a great guide to keep young and fit, and remain healthy and independent for a very long time. Thank you!

I am 45 years old. I have or had high cholesterol, high blood pressure and am still overweight although that is improving. I have this book, Dr. Life's other book, The Life Plan and lots of personal research to thank. Looking at this author gives me hope that I can live life to the fullest up and through my senior years and into the twilight ones. The last time I went to my personal physician, my blood pressure was normal, cholesterol is in the excellent range, testosterone was normal and I have lost 23 pounds. I still have about 25 pounds to go and they are coming off as planned. All of this I attribute to Dr. Life as an author and example.

I have noticed several reviews that talk about the dangers of HGH or Human Growth Hormone for those that do not know what HGH is. Dr. Life does not recommend this for everyone. Only under the care of a physician and only if you have a deficiency. He would much rather that you increase HGH through exercise and other lifestyle changes. He does recommend testosterone supplementation under the care of a physician as your natural testosterone levels decrease with age just as estrogen is given to women as their estrogen decreases with age. However, testosterone can be increased with exercise and diet as well but will generally need to be supplemented as age increases through the senior years. Sarcopenia affects all men as they age and is a decrease in muscle mass associated with decreased testosterone. Both testosterone and HGH, IF needed and recommended by your phsician help to combat this and other age related diseases.

I would recommend this book to all men age 30 and above to prepare for a fantastic long and productive life. You cannot start too early to take care of your temple. You only get one!
