Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Anyone with a desire to master machine applique can do so by taking the time and effort to work through this beautifully organized manual. Hargrave has authored a number of critically acclaimed quilting books, including Heirloom Machine Quilting and From Fabric to Fiber. Machine applique has become more attractive to the home sewer with the advent of modern sewing machines and new fusibles and stabilizers to make the technique more easily mastered. This second edition updates the earlier volume with methods, materials, and techniques that have come to the fore since the first edition was published ten years ago. After an extensive discussion of equipment and supplies recommended for machine applique and of sewing machine maintenance and troubleshooting, Hargrave covers raw-edge techniques like the satin stitch and the blanket stitch as well as invisible machine appliqu‚ on a turned-edge. Close-up step-by-step photos of critical techniques are included. This practical workshop-in-a-book is eminently suitable for both solitary learners and workshop participants and is highly recommended for all public libraries with fabric crafts collections.

More About the Author

Harriet started quilting seriously in 1974, working alongside her mom. Her early quilting career included producing baby quilts for craft shows and teaching adult education classes. In 1981, harriet opened her quilt shop, Harriet's Treadle Arts. Her specialties at the time were free-motion embroidery, machine arts, and machine quilting. In 1982, Harriet attended one of Mary Ellen Hopkins's seminars. Mary Ellen's streamlined techniques and innovative design ideas led harriet to a new way of thinking, which caused her to give up the machine arts and to teach only quilting. Today, she is world renowned for being a true "mover and shaker" in the quilt world. In the late 1990s, she was voted one of the "88 Leaders of the Quilt World." Harriet created and inspired a whole new generation of machine quilters with her bestselling book Heirloom Machine Quilting, which has enjoyed 22 continuous years in print. She is also the author of Mastering Machine Appliqué and From Fiber to Fabric, and co-author of The Art of Classic Quiltmaking. She is responsible for a myriad of products pertaining to machine quilting, and she has developed batting with hobbs Bonded fibers and designed fabric for P&B Textiles. 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Applique Book, October 18, 2005
This review is from: Mastering Machine Applique: The Complete Guide, Including Invisible Machine Applique, Satin Stitch, Blanket Stitch & Much More, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
Harriet takes the intimidating world of applique and breaks it sown into a series of simple steps. Her approach is well organized and very practical, with a hands-on approach. You will progress from very simple shapes and techniques to more complex patterns and techniques - without feeling pushed. In fact, if you practice the exercise lessons a few times, you might not even really notice as you move into complex designs. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone even considering applique. Browsing it will give you the courage to forge into a whole new realm of design.

this is a fabulous resource. every step of machine appliqueing is thoroughly covered--needles, thread, sewing machine bobbin tension, stitches uesed, etc., etc.--nothing you need to produce wonderful applique is ignored. and some of the information will also make machine piecing easier.

seeing what harriet hargrave can accomplish with a machine is insprirational. if you have shied away from applique because hand applique seems to take too long, buy this book and get busy. you will be able to produce such wonderful results that no one will suggest machine is not as good as hand applique.

defnitely belongs in any quilter's library.
