Straight from a beginner,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mastering Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 (Paperback)
Take it straight from a beginner: this is the perfect book for you. Oddly enough (for computer books) all of the sample screens are totally accurate as you go through the actual installs of Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Exchange 2000 Enterprise. Mr. Gerber explains each small detail: Windows basic installation, then promoting your installation to a domain controller by adding ADSI, then how Exchange 2000 uses ADSI and how to install and use the MMC builder. I'm now at the point where we've gone on and installed Office 2000, made the client settings, and are getting ready to test for an Outlook client. I'm telling you, from a guy who came here knowing zip, this book was perfect for me. Thank you.

Don't expect to get tips for setting up complex, multi-domain configurations with this book. This is the bare-bones basic walk through for Win2000/Exchange2000. I really wanted to learn how to receive emails for multiple Internet domains, but no luck. If this is your first time setting up an Exchange Server in a single Win2K setting, this book is for you. This book is not useful for an ISP, ASP, or Web Host.Other than that, it serves as a really good book for navigating Exchange 2000 basics (I was entirely new to Exchange, so I can't comment for those migrating from Exchange 5.5).

Mastering Exchange Server 2000,

I am not entirely new to Exchange, and this book deserves way better than 3 stars. Even more so if you are entirely new to Exchange. The book has step by step instructions on setting up Exchange and Win 2000 for a single domain. The author is very clear, and alerts you of any pitfalls, or different ways of doing things along the way. I also reccomend "MCSE Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Implementation and Administration Training Kit"

Great book for anyone wanting to learn Exchange 2000,

This is a great book for learning the basics of Exchange 2000. The book is well organized and answered most all of my basic questions since I was completely new to Exchange 2000. I know I have a lot to learn, but this book was an excellent starting place.

If you have never used Exchange 2000 you may want to buy this book. The author scratches the surface of some very nice topics and then walks away from them. The first 400 pages are filler explaining Windows 2000 and very basic AD concepts.Very disappointing book unless you are an Exchange newbie, and even then it probably wouldn't help as the author just scratches the surface of a topic.

Get this book to help jump start your Exchange install and deployment. Great for a beginner like me. Now it's time for something with more depth, like how to secure Exchange 2000 and Windows 2000 before exposure to the Internet.

I found this book highly aggravating and not at all useful. The author describes the obvious in painful detail while skipping the many things that really need explaining. His open 'chummy' writing style is, I suppose, supposed to be congenial, but it's just annoying. Mark Minasi he is not.He does cover a lot of material, and if you've never seen an email server before in your life you might find some of it useful. But if you're an even slightly experienced SysAdmin, this will just not satify you.

Great "starter" book for new Exchange admins,

I was given responsibility of my company's Exchange infrastructure during our migration from Exchange 5.5. This book helped me to learn the basics of installation and configuration. A knowledge of Active Directory is helpful (but this is not an AD book) and the book does not go in to a lot of depth on many topics such as troubleshooting. The book is easy to read and the writer's style is easy to follow, though he does point out the obvious frequently, but that is okay because this is a basics book. I found it a great starting point for learning Exchange 2000; the Exchange 2000 Server 24seven book is a great place to pick up where this book leaves off.

Great book,

Great Book. I had never deployed Exchange Server before, but using this book I was able to understand, setup, and put exchange online for my company in only a few days. We were even able to use "OWA" (Outlook Web Access) that allows our employees to access their email through a browser from any location in the world that has Internet access. No book is perfect, but this one provided nearly everything I needed to know to setup and run exchange. And if the book doesn't provide the answer to your question, the author does. Three times I emailed the author, Barry Gerber, requesting information on some important point, and three times Barry responded much faster than I would have dreamed. One time he replied with the answer I needed within 5 minutes! Great book, great Author! If you need to deploy Exchange Server for your organization, you can get it done using this book!

Book written by a Microsoft cheerleader,

A lot of space is used describing how cool a feature is, or how easy Exchange 2000 is to use. Looking in the book's Acknowledgments, the author gives his "deepest thanks to the marketing folks at Microsoft and Microsoft's public relations support firm". That's how the book comes across to me, something written by a PR firm. For example, when I wanted to learn about OWA, I was met with this text: "If everything I've said so far about Exchange 2000 Server's OWA has failed to excite you, I know this will." I don't need excitement. I need to know how Exchange 2000 works! I agree with a previous reviewer, that the author describes the obvious in a chatty way, without giving any real understanding. Rather like a long-winded friend who never gets to the point. |
