5.0 out of 5 stars Great Technical Book - No Pictures No Long drawn out explanations
I have not programmed since C+ in Visual Studio 6.0 back in College.

This book has gotten me up to speed in no time. I read the first 300 pages in PDF then had to buy the book because there was just so much to do read then do and flipping back and fourth in the computer was becoming a pain, even with a 24inch monitor. Since then I have only done 1 chapter,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Technical Book - No Pictures No Long drawn out explanations, February 28, 2011

Since then I have only done 1 chapter, due to my slacking and building a new machine to run the project I will be making.

But this is a No Frills Book - Not diagrams, few charts, mostly words and examples that you can download off the net if needed. Another nice point is the Added chapters you can download for free from the website, along with the course projects. This book goes into more Depth then other books I was reading, I was looking at one .net 2010 book and by the end of that book you were on to chapter 2 in this book. Just the amount of information and the logical progression is Superb.

This is not for your 24hr specials - this is a 3-4 Month reading and doing book. Pending on how versed you are in programming as a whole and how well you know .net framework. I knew Nothing about .net and this is a new adventure; but this book is a perfect guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars slam dunk, August 4, 2010
This review is from: Mastering Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 (Paperback)
I bought this book without hesitation because I have his book of the same kind for VB.NET 2005. Brilliant guy, the 2005 book covered how to do many standard AND advanced things the best, modern way. This is a book for experienced programmers so I got it in addition to my recent purchase of a regular book on VB.NET 2010 that covers the fundamentals. He really knows how to target (i.e. topics, presentation and code examples) the experienced programmer who has to do some of it all. I still find his 2005 book useful even though I am using VS2010 ! This new book will give me big advantages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource, December 17, 2011

Excellent coverage of .net. It was nice that the author's first 3 chapters are aimed at those with no .net experience; he states you can skip ahead if you are already familiar.

Part 2 (Chapters 4-7) covers development, Part3 (8-10) custom classes and controls, Part4 (11-14) covers the .net framework, Parts 5 & 6 (15-21) data-driven programming and web.

Good coverage of LINQ also.

I am still working through the book but have learned a lot on the past month. would recommend based on current experience.

I enjoyed reading this book (still haven't finished it). Its language style is clear, logical and easy to understand. As most books in the Mastering series, it is also exhaustive in it's handling of the topic. Having read the book Mastering Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 - or at least most of it - one would be well on the way to being a confident VB 2010 programmer. After this, the book would serve as an excellent reference for your bookshelf. I recommend this book to both beginner and accomplished VB hobby and professional programmers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Manual & Desktop Reference, September 10, 2011

This was exactly what I needed to get up and running quickly to make and modify many user applications in VB2010. I had several legacy apps from VB6 that I never converted to VB2005 because I didn't want a lot of hassles and debugging downtime. This book helped me navigate to the essential considerations and modification and upgrade was a breeze. The book is broken up nicely depending on if one is building Windows, Web, or data driven apps. This greatly streamlines finding the answers to questions and provides many solutions. The interface for Visual Studio is so much different but this book gets one to the heart of the VB world. Kudos to the author for getting this one just right, as this is not one that will become another dust collector on the bookshelf. I literally keep it at arms length and refer to it regularly.

This review is from: Mastering Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 (Paperback)
The product (VB10 text) I needed and wanted (1) was immediately available, (2) at a cost substantially lower than local retail stores, (3) using a payment process (credit card) with a trusted vender which was fast and convenient; (4) the product arrived in new condition well within acceptable time for such a transaction, and (5) a review of the textbook during the first week revealed contents which meet my needs.

i am having both visual basic 2008 and visual basic 2010 books.

Pro

--The author claims that you may have a basic understandable level of VB before going through his book
I believe you may be an intermediate developer to use this book

---The quality of example are good. You learn how to do lot of funny things.Things you never found in other books. At this stage you find the difference between this book and the others.

--and of course you ll master many things ! The amount of knowledge at the end of any chapter is substential.
As before i came through this book i have used Deitel simply series,Murach vb 2008,Oreilly Programming Vb 2008,Wrox Professional VB2008.

Cons

--the style of writing is amaizing .But guess it a part of.Guessing thing is a good method of teaching in programming.Only when people have acquire all the basis. In the book there are lot of mistakes..The author present one Sub and let you guess the rest....

--The code is subject to trouble.the code files are marqued as unidentified.I am talking aboout 2008 Edition files. There are lot of syntax errors to correct. The writer did not pay attention to that.

--Finally you dont know.It is not a tutorial book. You always have to guess how to design the example.
You always have to guess the code. When you go through the book you find the writer is and old timer with lot of experience.

Conclusion

I will say the technical writer of the book is weak.He may have correct many things. The way of teaching may be re oriented. The code reviewed.I rate the book three star : Because the design is weak.In design i mean the way of teaching, the code..
