Editorial Reviews

Review

"I have had the privilege of knowing John Beckett for many years. I have visited his company and interacted with his employees. Mastering Monday is not theory, but evidence of what God can do through an individual life. This book is an encouragement to any business leaders who want to make a difference where God has placed them." (André Thornton, Author, Businessman, Former First Baseman for the Cleveland Indians)

"A timely and relevant book that challenges us to live out our faith in our daily lives. John Beckett's personal journey reflects the principles he advocates. A must-read book for anyone who desires to serve God in the workplace." (Johanna C. Zeilstra, Vice President, JPMorgan Chase)

"If Loving Monday convinced you that your faith belongs at work as much as it belongs at church, Mastering Monday will give you the confidence and the foundation to not only integrate faith and the workplace, but to do it boldly. Someone needs to make a difference. . . . You are that someone." (Pat Wingen, Founder and President, AaLadin Industries Inc.)

"John Beckett is a man who has learned from experience. He was thrown into the business world at a young age and did marvelously. He applies Christian principles and now is in a position to help others integrate their faith in the workplace." (Steve Douglass, president, Campus Crusade for Christ)

"Beckett hits another home run! Tested by real business challenges and wise from years of biblical reflection, Beckett's Mastering Monday is a winner. This book on integrating faith at work avoids simplistic platitudes; it's practical, faith-filled and worthy." (David W. Miller, Ph.D., Executive Director, Yale Center for Faith & Culture)

"The greatest attribute of Mastering Monday is its author, John Beckett. He is a man of character and integrity who knows not simply how to write about managing an organization but clearly knows how to do it with effectiveness. Mastering Monday is a book that can help take your life and organization to a new level." (Phil Savage, General Manager, Cleveland Browns)

"You will find no one better qualified to address this topic than John Beckett. He has demonstrated, during the sixteen years I have known him, a great understanding of how to integrate faith and work in the marketplace. His practical advice on how to do this is essential reading whether you are an entrepreneur or the CEO of a Fortune 100 company." (Mac McQuiston, President, CEO Forum, Inc.)

"John Beckett once again speaks to all of us in business on the true teachings of Christ in regard to the 'oneness' of our spiritual life and our life at work. Mastering Monday gives us examples from both biblical times as well as current events on the struggle that all leaders face, and many examples of leaders who have based their leadership philosophy on Judeo-Christian values and the blessings that have followed." (Matthew K. Rose, chairman, president and CEO, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation)

"This is yet another powerful book by John Beckett wherein his passion and insight into working with God can help us all produce lives, products and services that represent our Master as well. It comes from a man whose integrity, and what he has actually produced, punctuate it with a quiet, compelling authenticity." (Dennis Peacocke, President, Strategic Christian Services)

"Mastering Monday focuses on the business workplace, but its call to a life of Christian integrity is equally applicable to all professions. Today, when cynicism and narrow self-interest seem to dominate our culture, these personal stories celebrating and illustrating the power of service and the practical value of the Christian walk are truly heartwarming. In simple and gracious style, John Beckett reminds us by modern example and biblical reflection not only that the Christian faith is true, but also that Jesus' lordship brings abundant life--even at work." (Ian Hutchinson, Professor and Head of the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

"Mastering Monday: A Guide to Integrating Faith and Work is written by my friend John Beckett. It couldn't be more timely. It combines important biblical insights about work with individual testimonies of both success and failure. There are few in America today who can write with more authority and insight on this subject than John. I highly recommend it." (Chuck Colson, Founder and Chairman, Prison Fellowship)

"This is a fantastic book written by one of America's premier business leaders. John does a masterful job communicating the leadership lessons born of wisdom and faith that mark every successful, competent leader. Every page is lined with fresh insights." (Gayle D. Beebe, President, Spring Arbor University)

"John Beckett's Mastering Monday is a further development of the theme he discussed in his first book, Loving Monday. The secret that nurtures the connection between faith and work lies in understanding Beckett's passion to walk intimately with Jesus in his personal life, constantly seeking practical wisdom from the Bible. This book serves as a guide to all kingdom business practitioners." (Tetsunao Yamamori, International Director, LCWE, coeditor, On Kingdom Business, President Emeritus, Food for the Hungry International)

"Having read just about everything in the 'faith at work' literature, I found Mastering Monday to be something different, something refreshing. That's no surprise, though, since it's authored by John Beckett, a man who broke new ground with his first book, Loving Monday. Now, in this book, John leads us on a reflective journey through the Scriptures to discover God's perspective on integrating faith and work. I was delighted to follow." (Michael Zigarelli, Dean, Regent University School of Business)

"John Beckett's book Mastering Monday is a memoir and tutorial on how a young CEO faced down adversity and achieved remarkable success in business along with personal fulfillment by ordering his life and work around the people and principles in the Bible. If you, like me, want to know what the real thing looks like, this is it." (J. Stanley Oakes Jr., President, The King's College, New York City)

"An awesome book--by a choice servant of God. John's book is a must for every Christian, especially in the workplace, who strives for integrity and completeness with God in all of life, not separating sacred and secular. With God, all is holy and sacred." (Henry T. Blackaby, president of Blackaby Ministries International, coauthor of Experiencing God)

"Some Christians have bought the heresy that they should separate their Christianity from the workplace. John Beckett updates authentic Christian tradition and provides examples of Christians who do not accept the false division between Christianity and the workplace. This is a book of value to every Christian, the bosses and workers alike." (Paul M. Weyrich, Chairman and CEO, Free Congress Foundation, Washington, D.C.)

John Beckett has accurately captured many of the struggles and tensions Christians experience daily in the marketplace. Aspects of the author's journey are common to many Christians. His chapter "Integrating two Worlds" will be a help to any Christian in the marketplace -it is an issue that continually manifests itself. The phrase "I found that my growing faith was often relevant to work issues - but the reverse was also true. Workplace issues challenged and strengthened my faith, occasionally more than I anticipated." provides an encouraging perspective. The author shares his own experiences in this realm - in a transparent way that should be encouraging to all who read.

The section "Companions on the Journey" provides a number of biblical stories and characters from which much is to be learned and applied to our work world today. These are not one size fits all stories, but the characters and illustrations the author selects will provide much to think about. This is mixed in with some stories of contemporary business leaders and recent situations they have faced and their responses.

Finally, a discussion of God's workplace agenda and what theme's the author believes are critical in this discussion. In light of some recent business failures (more specifically failures of leadership) - this section does a good job of connecting the themes to "good business". It is a reminder of what really matters - and some encouragement to have the courage to do the right things.

This is a pretty quick reading book, but I don't think it is a read once and put it on the shelf. I'm sure I'll be referring back to it every year or so to remind myself of proper perspectives and to be encouraged in my work.

Total integration of the concepts that bring Christian values and work together as expressed in Mastering Monday work. It is not fiction. As a friend of John, his family and the R W Beckett Corporation for many years,I have witnessed the successful result. Placing the Christian Values as expressed in this book into the workplace can bring about successful change in any corporation and in the lives of the entire workforce.

This book is really just an extension of John's life. I've known John and his family for more than thirty years. Jesus said, "By their fruits you shall know them." Sometimes you have to get close to inspect the fruit. John's faith, family and business are definitely integrated. The fruit that I've personally had witness to for over three decades is as high a quality as anyone that I know in Christendom. If you're a Christian who has to work for a living, you should own this book.

A sequel to John Beckett's first book: LOVING MONDAY, MASTERING MONDAY takes the reader to ever more significant opportunities for the integration of faith and work. Loving Monday is a best seller in China and other parts of the world as well as in the USA. John Beckett is a no nonsense, hard hitting and disciplined believer who not only walks the talk but writes out of a heart and soul committed to his decidedly Christian belief structure. He has lived what he writes. He has performed with excellence in the marketplace, his family, his community and his company. Be prepared to have your belief system challenged and shaped by MASTERING MONDAY.

This book is a comfortable read with jewels of practical wisdom for everyday life in the workplace. It gives courage to those of us who waver with non-believing teammates; it issues a gentle mandate for those with clout to use it for God's glory.

Before I share my thoughts with you regarding Mastering Monday I'd like to take you back with me to one of Mr. Beckett's first books "Loving Monday"

Several years ago I came about a book titled "Loving Monday - Succeeding in business without selling your soul!" Shortly after reading "Loving Monday" I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Beckett, the man who wrote "Loving Monday" and by the grace of God I was led to Christ. I have stayed in touch with Mr. Beckett ever since and we have become great spiritual friends. He is a true spiritual mentor to me and many others.

When I learned that Mastering Monday's had been written and then received my copy I could hardly wait to read it. I was exited to learn what the Lord had stirred in Mr. Beckett's heart to pour onto the pages of "Mastering Monday". From the very beginning of reading it the one thing that was stuck in my mind was the word "Master" and I kept saying God Bless you Mr. "B" you truly have Mastered brining the words and history from the bible and applying them to the world we live in today and situations we encounter.

I urge anyone and especially those in business and positions of authority to read both of these books. You'll be thanking God you did!

Respectfully,

Alan R. Mercurio

Mastering Monday is essential reading for business leaders, or anyone who leads and manages other people. John Beckett draws examples from biblical personalities and business leaders who have walked with integrity through difficult challenges. Beckett shares out of 40 years of success as a CEO while maintaining his integrity. This book is insightful and inspiring. It is easy to read and well worth the time to read, not once, but again and again.
