Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Mastering Palm Organizers, weighing many times more than your Palm organizer and all its accessories, is a worthwhile way to get your portable pal decked out with the latest software before you head out on the road. You'll also find it handy as a manual that explains the Palm applications (aftermarket ones as well as those that ship with the Palm from the factory) and advanced Palm capabilities, such as conduits. You'll be particularly impressed by the coverage of Palm connectivity. Everything from straightforward modem HotSyncs to various electronic mail solutions and Web clipping with the Palm VII gets attention. The companion CD-ROM includes a large library of Palm software--it'll enable you to try programs you might not have the chance to download yourself.

About a quarter of this book deals with programming for the Palm, but there is too much discussion of obvious aspects of programming environments. Does it really need to be pointed out that Ctrl+C in Satellite Forms performs a copy operation? Also, the section on programming could be far stronger. (If this particular topic interests you, read Palm OS Programming for Dummies or, if you're ready to move beyond the basics, get Palm Database Programming.) Despite its weaknesses, though, Mastering Palm Organizers is a decent buy, particularly for the CD-ROM and the sections on communications. --David Wall

Topics covered: 3Com Corporation's Palm line of personal organizers and, by extension, other handheld devices that run the Palm OS operating system (such as the Handspring Visor). This book runs the spectrum from basic how-to documentation of the integrated Palm OS applications (Date Book, Calculator, and the others) to connectivity with wired modems and wireless Palm VIIs. You'll find tips about good aftermarket software, as well, much of it on the companion CD-ROM.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mastering Palm Organizers (review), June 17, 2000
This review is from: Mastering Palm Organizers (Paperback)
I have looked at several "Palm" books, and this is one of the best. I am a software developer and wanted to write applications for the Palm series devices (as a user interface for process control applications). Having never used a Palm Pilot, I used this book to quickly bring myself up to speed on the operation and capability of the Palm Pilot. The main selling point is the chapter devoted to software development using the Metrowerks "Code Warrior" software products. Very well written book, and would highly recommend it for anyone (from novice user to serious software developer).
