I love to bead and peyote is my favorite beading stitch. This book contains 15 projects and I actually like most of them.
The book contains 2 projects made with flat peyote stitch, 3 projects with circular peyote stitch, and 3 projects using tubular peyote. Then there are 5 projects called "peyote stitch extras" which incorporate other techniques like freeform and sculptural and other stitches like herringbone, right angle weave and netting.
The final 2 projects are categorized as "finishing touches", teaching various types of fringe, picot edging, bezels and others.

The photography is in full-color and is of great quailty. The diagrams are really clear and, at a glance, you can see how the pattern progresses. No matter how well-written beading instructions are, it is alwasys easy to get confused and lose track of where you are. That is why good diagrams are so important and this book has that.

The author also included a resource section in back which is nice to have.

Overall, this is a great book and I would recommend it to both beginners and advanced beaders.

Be sure to check out the "Look Inside" feature above so you can see for yourself the quality of the diagrams and you will also be able to see what some of the projects look like.

I have been beading for several years now and I am familiar with nearly all of the beading techniques. Personally, I would rather see patterns that are actual pictures, rather than drawings. While I admire some of the beading projects, I find the instructions in this book hard to understand and have had to look to similar instructions from other beading books to actually understand the author's instructions. I would not recommend this book for a beginner.

I was looking forward to this book and now I finally have it. The pictures are thumbnails or have an unnecessary amount of white space. It's a beading book of instructions, with lots of words. If the pictures had been bigger it would be perfect.

From that perspective it is just "ok".

The projects were repetitive and uninspiring. There are three variations on circular coins, three variations on geometric shapes done in tubular peyote and three variations of cabochon links (plus one cuff with a cabochon). I've seen similar designs in other books that delivered far more bang for the buck in terms of variety and clarity. It may prove useful at some point for technique details, but won't be a book to which I often refer.

Once again, Interweave has delivered a book with great instructions and photos of projects the give any beader peyote projects to enhance their knowledge of the stitch. However, I find myself thinking that I'd rather have a couple more projects and just forego the repetitive, BASIC info contained in the first 24 pages.

I haven't done much peyote stitch and there were a few issues that I sort of muddled through by myself, however this book explains a lot of the finishing off techniques which I found particularly useful. It also has clear instructions for other variations of peyote stitch.

Once you decide you want to learn beadweaving, one of the best stitches to begin with is peyote.
Melinda Barta has provided the reader with the basics and so much more, in Mastering Peyote Stitch, 15 Inspiring Projects. This lovely book incorporates several other stitches, edgings and embellishments to delight us.Some superstar beadweavers offer projects as well: Jean Campbell, Lisa Kan, Jean Power, Sherry Serafini and more design some amazing projects based on the peyote stitch within this book. When you note that there are 12 more variations on the 15 projects, you see what a terrific value this book is.
Great, understandable illustrations and gorgeous photos will get the reader's inspiration going right away. As Melinda says at the beginning of her introduction, "The next time you're at a bead show or class, ask the beaders around you about their favorite technique and they'll probably tell you peyote stitch is their hands-down favorite". So off we go, into the wonderful world of peyote stitch. Melinda finishes her introduction by encouraging the reader to "have fun". That is the intent of this book, and it is what it delivers. Fun, combined with some really amazingly beautiful beadweaving!
After the excellent basics chapter, you begin with flat peyote. The author's own covergirl necklace, "Walkin' After Midnight" makes its appearance here, replete with stunning pearls and beaded leaves, inspired, as the author says, "by the silvery hues of leaves in moonlight." This necklace is extremely evocative. Any reader will love to make it. The directions for it are extremely thorough and understandable, as they continue to be for each project in the book.
