2.0 out of 5 stars Extremely basic - for the very beginner
I have reviewed many real estate books and this is a very very basic book for beginners of residential real estate math. The book starts with adding and subtracting. There is no section on the finance behind income producing properties such as determing cap rates, cash flows, etc. Even for beginners, this book is extremely basic with basic math formulas. Whether you are entering the real estate market for the first time and are prepping for your exam, or are a seasoned pro, this book is a total Godsend! Ralph Tamper and his associates have amassed an impressive, comprehensive and easily digestible volume on any and everything you need to know about the specifics of real estate math to get started-and thrive-in the business. And, if like me me, it's been a very long time since you've even seen a math book, you, too, will be eternally grateful for this book!
Mastering Real Estate Math walks you step-by-step through every pertinent scenario and provides clear, concise instruction, practice questions, and a challenging test at each chapter's end, so you'll feel confident and ready on exam day...and beyond. The answer key shows the methodology used in problem solving, enhancing the learniong process.
I couldn't have passed my exam without it! This text should absolutely be a requirement in all real estate education curriculums in the USA, not just for exam prep, but for use in everyday practice. Even my mortgage broker in California who has 20 years in the business got it and he loves it!
Big kudos again to Ralph Tamper and Co. for a producing an essential workbook, and thus providing real estdate industry professionals with a tremendous asset. And kudos also to Dearborn Real Estate Education for their fine roster of real estate educational materials.

You would need a supplemental book with more advanced concepts. If you have no math background, then this is a good book but if you know some math, I would recommend a more advanced book.

4.0 out of 5 stars the right formula, July 25, 2005
if you are a real estate agent having trouble figuring closing costs, pricing, escrow accounts and other real estate math essentials, this is a good book. there are no "magic" math books. you have to sit down with your paper, pencil, calculator and practice. learn some basic formulas, study the material which is well organized, and you'll have a lot more "math self confidence".

4.0 out of 5 stars Real estate math is basic, this puts it in context, October 23, 2010
By
The Alchemist "alchemista" (Orlando, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This book provides contextual explanations and sample real estate problems, and makes sure you understand the math behind problems. The math isn't the difficult part (unless you're severely math challenged), but it's the application and understanding of real estate transactions that adds value to the book. The book covers a variety of topics and then has many sample problems to work out. It briefly explains definitions and the purpose behind a transaction, and then shows how to work through the item. It then has a section at the end completely of more sample problems.

Overall a decent book just to serve as reference for how real estate transactions are done.

This is a great book to learn Real Estate Math. Lots of practice problems, answers in the back with step-by-step instructions. I had a previous class that used a different book, and it was a nightmare - with this book, I'm flying through class!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Text, March 31, 2011
Very decent text covering the math skills needed to perform real estate transactions. Provides decent explanations and provides practice problems. Because none of this material was new to me, it is difficult to gauge how clear it is for beginners

Mastering Real Estate Mathematics is a very good book. I purchased a used copy for my girlfriend who is mathematically challenged to say the least (as she will readily admit). She used this book as a tool to pass her state real estate licensing exam and will use it again for her state broker exam in 24 months. Get a copy if you need help with real estate math.
