5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Useful Book..............., August 11, 2003

This review is from: Mastering the Watercolor Wash (Paperback)
There are many books on watercolor techniques so why should you buy this one? You should buy this book because it an excellent reference book to help you learn the "nuts & bolts" of painting watercolors. As an example I refer to pages 44&45, "The Gradated Wash".Here artist Joe Garcia gives you a clear definition of the technique followed by very direct instructions and clear photos on how to proceed. He then gives you a tip at the end to get the best results. While this book seems at first glance to be more of an introduction to basic techniques more advanced artists will find this book to be very useful as a reference resource. The book like all North Light books is well designed with many photos and illustrations. When I first saw this book I figured do I really need this one? The answer is yes for the reasons I have mentioned. The author also explains his preference for materials and using watercolor boards which he makes himself. Now that it is available in a paperback edition there is no reason not to consider buying it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Watercolor washes by a master, October 8, 2005

Comprehensive guide to watercolor washes which includes an excellent range of examples, mostly of landscape subjects. Garcia is a very accurate detailed draftsman and some of the exercises can be challenging because of the detail rather than the actual technique. The book is well produced and a useful reference for the beginner and intermediate student.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, January 12, 2012

This is a must have for the serious watercolorist, his explanation of the wash is thorough, his tips n tricks are great and demos for practice give you room for your own groove...when is your next book coming Mr. Joe?
I highly recommend both this and his Watercolor Bible, you won't regret either of them and I find time and time again that I am pulling them for new ideas, techniques and inspirations when I hit the "creative wall."
Peace

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book but probably not for beginners, March 30, 2011

The book was highly recommended by more experienced watercolorists. I'm far from that stage in my endeavors. This is an excellent book with fine descriptions and great pictures. I don't think a beginner will appreciate a lot of the material here. I put this book down in favor of Watercolor For Dummies which addresses most/all of the basic questions I had. Once I get more experience with watercolors I plan to read Mastering The Watercolor Wash from cover to cover. So: great if you want to gain additional insight from a highly proficient watercolorist. Hold off for now if you are a beginner learning basic watercolor techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mastering the Watercolor Wash, December 16, 2010

This review is from: Mastering the Watercolor Wash (Paperback)
I have purchased so many books on this subject, and with the exception of a few books I have purchased this book is a must have! I can say that because I have purchased a ton of useless books on the subject "Watercolor Wash". I was just thrilled when I got it. The step-by-step is so easy to follow I was amazed. It's not like Joe just threw some things out there, and went on and on with never ending chapters of why to buy this brush or those color's, and types of paper or why to set up your pallet in some other order. His method's work, and I'm so glad that I did (against my better judgement) - buy "yet"' another Watercolor Book.
You won't get bored with this one - chapter after chapter you will want to follow along with Joe's techniques, they are very colorful, precise (not sloppy loose painting) however use less strokes, just enough to let the viewer's mind fill in the blanks of your finished painting.
My daughter wanted me to paint one of the Canal's in Venice for Christmas for her Dining Room, what a pleasent surprise to see those here in this Book.
Lot's of really excellent topic's, and beautifully illistrated step by step lessions wait until you see the pictures Joe has in this book for us to paint. You won't be sorry for buying this one! See other reviews here at Amazon.
