Book Description

0195188187 978-0195188189 June 16, 2005 1
ADHD in adulthood is a prevalent and impairing disorder. While medications have been effective in treating adult ADHD, the majority of individuals treated with medications have residual symptoms that require additional skills and symptom management strategies. Except for the intervention described in this series, there have been virtually no tested psychological interventions for clients with adult ADHD to date.

Used in conjunction with the corresponding client workbook, this therapist guide offers effective treatment strategies that follow an empirically-supported treatment approach. It provides clinicians with effective means of teaching clients skills that have been scientifically tested and shown to help adults cope with ADHD. The step-by-step, session-by-session descriptions are a practical resource for therapists who deliver the treatment to clients with ADHD. Together, the therapist guide and client workbook contain all of the information and materials necessary to delivery this treatment in the context of individual outpatient cognitive behavioral therapy.

This book is about as good as it gets for ADHD treatment. It doesn't say too much or too little, just what the ADHD person needs. I have tried all kinds of other techniques and books, but this one really stuck with me. I highly recommend it if you're looking for something that works over something long and complicated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward ADHD Treatment: Therapist's Companion Guide, June 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mastering Your Adult ADHD: A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Program Therapist Guide (Treatments That Work) (Paperback)
This companion therapist guide links very well with the patient guide for employing an additional treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

It starts at a very basic level to enhance motivation for treatment, and systematically (and repetitively) addresses skills to manage and organize life (such as obtaining calendar, notebook for task list, task list development and prioritization and plan for implementation), then moves on to distractablity (fitting tasks to individual's capacity, environmental manipulations) and finally to learn adaptive thinking strategies.

The modules are tightly organized, and build on each other. The overall program is very application oriented, with much stress on continual employment of strategies and techniques.

I think this is a very worthwhile product, which when used as it is intended, can lead to improvement for those with adult ADHD.

1.0 out of 5 stars overpriced and not much help, February 2, 2007

This review is from: Mastering Your Adult ADHD: A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Program Therapist Guide (Treatments That Work) (Paperback)
If you know nothing about ADHD you may learn a few things here but I would describe this book as 2 or 3 pages worth of helpful information crammed into an expensive 130-page manual. Save your money and read Driven to Distraction or other works.
