The book is printed in color and written for the latest release of Autodesk 3ds Max and Max Design 2011. That's huge! When learning Mental Ray nothing is more important than seeing the results (good or bad) clearly illustrated and based on the latest release of the software. For seasoned production artists, the breakdown of some of the fundamentals that may have been lost or glossed over is well needed and clearly communicated. Building on those fundamentals, Jennifer walks you through setting up Mental Ray early on in scene creation and then how to tweak settings as the scene evolves guiding you to the desired result. Using Mental Ray without guidance can sometimes put you in a position of being one radio button or check box away from success. The problem is which radio button or check box will make the difference? Thanks to Jennifer's skillful technical writing and illustrations (in color!), this problem can now be solved allowing the user to create stunning visualizations without the serious time penalty of trial and error or deeper research.
Mastering Mental Ray is a much needed resource for the growing Mental Ray community.

No matter what your experience level is with mental ray, this book will teach you something.

This book covers every single setting and control in mental ray. The author does an excellent job of explaining what each setting does in it's simplest form, and then takes it one step further by sharing the settings that she's found to work best in most cases.

There is an accompanying DVD with all of the source files so you can play with these settings for yourself and follow her examples step by step.

This book not only teaches you how to use mental ray effectively, but it covers how to use it efficiently as well which is what really sets this book apart from the others for me. There are numerous examples and studies in the book showing you how much of an impact certain settings will have on your render times, and also extensively covers evaluating and troubleshooting your renders using the diagnostic tools provided in mental ray.

This is an excellent read and my new go-to book whenever I have a mental ray problem or question.

This book is incredibly well thought out and can be understood at any level of expertise. It's far more than a book that just states a command or function without the "why" behind it. The author explains the techniques she is doing with just the right amount of detail. I never had one of those "how did they do that" moments. There is enough theory behind what she is doing, it helped me understand why things are done a certain way. Like I said this book is easy to follow, and detailed enough to comprehend. Ms. O'Connor takes the guessing and mystery out of Mental Ray. You'd be foolish to pass up this book.

For those of us architectural designers that don't have a clue about the science of how our computer's can produce these amazing renderings, this book is a great guide that can clear the clouds of misunderstandings. As most of us grapple with the subtleties of learning parametric modeling programs (sketchup, revit and archicad) this book will help to understand the proper formats to export to make your settings meaningful to digital artists. In working with Jennifer both as her client and as a fellow instructor, I was honored to learn my colleague put in print such a meaningful mastery of knowledge in such a straight forward way.

My favorite chapter is the light and shadows & exposure, as I was not trained as a lighting designer, only as an architect and this helped me to clearly understand how to set up scenes to make them more realistic. If your a beginner, you can find this easy to understand, and if your an expert at 3DS and revit, you will find this a useful guide to the subtle way the software functions.

The "Effects" section is also a great way to add special tricks to an image, even if your having an artist do this for you, it really gives you a background and understanding to help achieve the most high quality images. This book is first rate.
