About the Author

Edgar Rice Burroughs fame stems from the creation of Tarzan and the Barsoom science fiction series. He was born on September 1, 1875 in Chicago, Illinois, and entered military service in 1895. Two years later, he was diagnosed with a heart problem and was discharged. He drifted from job to job and in 1911, he found work selling pencil sharpeners. Because he had plenty of free time during this period, he started reading pulp fiction magazines. He thought that if people were getting paid for writing such rot, then he could write stories which were just as rotten. After seven years of being paid low wages he began writing his own fiction. The first Tarzan and John Carter stories were published in 1912.

If you have read any of the Barsoom stories by Burroughs, you have an idea of how this book will read. I will say unlike the first 5 in the series, this one took a few chapters to become interesting enough that I wasn't forcing myself to continue to read it. It is short so it wasn't terrible but I was a little bored and disappointed at first.

As to this edition which was published in 2012 by the listed company, I was very disappointed with the typos. There are not a ton of them but the wrong word or tense of a word is used at times. It is like someone used spell check to find any misspelled words. The word used is spelled correctly but it is not the one that should be there. There are also sentences without proper puncuation. If you are reading this and have any grasp of grammer and puncuation you will see that I myself am pretty darn bad at it so the mistakes made in the book have to be glaring for me to notice, which I did. That said, the publishing errors do not destroy the story, I just find them annoying when I run across them and I blame the editors of this edition, not Burroughs as his other works did not have these types of mistakes.

Probably not all will like Edgar Rice Burroughs's style of writing. It is rather archaic. However, I have liked his "Martian" tales since I was a child. I had long remembered this tale as my very favorite, but had a very hard time finding it in print to verify that I still liked it. Having found it and re-read it, I think I liked it now, as an adult, more than I liked when I was a child. The whole idea of brain transplants seems to be more of a coming reality than it did years ago. This story shows what could happen if this were to become possible. This will continue to be my favorite Edgar Rice Burroughs Martian read.

I purchased these Edgar Rice Burroughs books to read again.
I used to own all ten books but being in the military and moving a lot I lost or misplaced them.
These purchases were to replace the books and as a bonus I can take them with me on my Kindle.

New movie coming out about John Carter of Mars. These are the Mars books written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. This is a series. Great for young people. This was just one of the books in the series that are so hard to find.
