Product Description

Much has changed since Selfridges first opened its doors. Five years later, Europe is on the brink of war and London is enjoying one last defiant period of hedonism and decadence. Having rocked the retail world with his pioneering new store, Mr. Selfridge (Jeremy Piven) now has his sights set on joining the establishment and rebuilding his family life. His desperate attempts to win back estranged wife Rose (Frances O Connor), are hindered by her friendship with Delphine Day, the daring and extravagant owner of a fashionable London nightclub. Tensions are also running high on the shop floor as Agnes is back from Paris, chic and successful. Not everyone is thrilled by her newfound confidence and by the sudden reappearance of her old ally Henri Leclair, who has mysteriously returned from America.

In Season 2, it seems all of our favorite characters are back although many with changed circumstances. It is no longer 1908. It is now 1914 and some of the new circumstances will surprise you, and add to the interest of the show. You will see how Selfridges Store and its occupants respond to WWI and its effects in this season.

Harry Selfridge (Jeremy Piven) is more self-aware, less ebullient, and more contemplative regarding his past actions. He wants to put his marriage and family first - will he be able to? Rose Selfridge (Frances O'Connor) attracts him with her Edwardian sensuousness which makes you wonder why Harry would ever stray. Of course, Lady Mae Oxley (Katherine Kelly) fairly smolders and ignites every scene in which she is in. Agnes (Aisling Loftus) has a luminosity which blends with Henri's (Gregory Fitoussi) French chivalry and charm when they work on store designs together. Victor (Trystan Gravelle), the waiter, is an enigma - is he going to win over Agnes? The faces of all of the characters just suit them - marvelous bit of casting.

The fashions have changed, featuring new hairstyles and clothes in the second decade of the 20th century . There is a deepening of the characters as more of their backstory is revealed. You see why they are the way they are.

The script, by Andrew Davies (PRIDE AND PREJUDICE 1995, MIDDLEMARCH) sparkles and is based upon the biography SHOPPING, SEDUCTION & MR. SELFRIDGE. If you liked Season 1 of this show, you should appreciate this season. It has the same light insouciance, but with some deeper backstory. The fashions rule along with the story and characters, providing one more reason to watch. For SELFRIDGE fans, it was announced in February 2014 that Season 3 has been contracted for airing 2015.

This series is a dramatization of a real American, Harry Selfridge, who opened a department store in London in the early 1900s. Jeremy Piven plays Mr. Selfridge. He reminds me of a young Richard Dreyfuss. What is amazing about this series, unlike the other English-based dramas, such as Downton Abbey, is how it keeps the drama riveting with every episode. Literally, all the cast member's performances are wonderful. From Rose Selfridge coping with her ambitious husband to Mr Grove's, head of HR, making wrong decisions over and over. I'm curious how long the series will continue, because there are more real life drama ahead. By the way, Selfridge Department store is still open.

An unexpected wonderful experience that pulls you in beginning with Season 1, Episode 1. I stumbled across this gem of a series while browsing through Amazon Prime Instant Videos.

I wish there were more than two seasons. The storylines will run you through faceted emotions from happiness and joy to concern and grief...., and occasionally a feeling of conflicting emotions as you become more attached to the wonderful cast of characters.

The acting is top-notch, and there are multiple storylines that each hold their own. As your viewing experience gets closer the end of the last season, you will begin to wish that there were a 3rd, 4th, and 5th season.

In the end, I believe that 2 full seasons was enough to complete multiple story arcs without feeling rushed or abruptly ending without a sense of closure. I will now continue to browse through the PBS series in hopes of finding another gem..., but Mr Selfridge will be extremely hard to top. A true joy..., watching this free Prime series is a must.

If you've enjoyed other PBS productions such as Downton Abbey, I think you'd enjoy this one too. I've been so interested in learning the true story of Mr. Selfridge, an American who came to London and changed the face of English department stores and shopping. It is a period piece, but the characters are well acted and interesting.

Great beginning for the second season. It looks like the second season will revolve around WWI just like the second season of "Downton Abbey" did. 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the beginning of WWI.I am looking forward to watching the rest of this coming season.
